I've found an 81 GPZ1100 for sale locally that doesn't seems too bad. The guy says its got a wiseco kit and its missing its fuel injection.

Can anyone tell me a little bit more about this bike, aside from the wikipedia page? Does have any quirks or anything like that?

As for the fuel injection, ive read a little bit on the carb swap and im not too sure on anything. With the wiseco kit would it be best to find the fuel injection to restore or put on a set of carbs? If so what rack?

I think i can get it cheap enough that the lack of the running gear would be worth it.

Thanks!

The '81 GPz1100 was Kawi's second fuel injected bike, and used a analog bosch-type fuel injection.

People really didn't understand the FI system, and after they were out of warranty, and people didn't know how to fix them a lot of them got carburetors installed on them. It's not an easy conversion, as the fuel tank needs to be modded to make it work.

If they still have all the FI parts, including the computer in the back tail section, you could restore it, but if they are all missing, it'd take a while to find them all, and you'd want a complete bike sitting next to it to study so you could get it going.

Might be a fun project -

My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

Oh, if there was an 1981 model in my area, and all the stars aligned, ..., and my wife said OK, I would not hesitate. Carbs or FI. GPzEric is correct...it might be fun to convert back to FI. However, if the head has been permanently plugged (the injectors mounted directly to the head), then it might not be worth the effort (unless you can snag another head from eBay). If the carbs are nice, like some flatslides, then you could be acquiring a great running motorcycle...maybe also great if they really have BS34-CV dialed in (Mikuni BS 34 is what one usually finds on these conversion bikes). :)

They were a nice bike. The only real problem they had FI wise was the air gate would bounce if you got on and off and back on the throttle quickly. Often the FI was traded out for VM29's or 33's. A good rider could run high 10's with one.

Cranks and alternators were the other problems they had. Thrust bearings would fail on the crank and the alternator rotor had a nasty habit of coming loose on the 81s. If it's still around, chances are the crank may have been done already. What you can do is pull the igniton cover off. With it sitting there idling, blip the throttle and see if the crank walks in an out. If there's a perceptible movement, the thrust bearing is on it's way out. I've seen them so whipped you could hear the crank squeal because it rubbed the cases....that's no BS either.

Look for silicone on the generator cover also. A tell tale sign it's been apart for some reason.
