As far as I know, Kawasaki called the UK bikes 'Z' and the USA bikes 'KZ'

Kawasaki did NOT ship KZ900 bikes to the US in 1978; 1977 was the last year in the US. However, they may have still been building and selling them in Japan, Europe, downunder, etc., and those bikes had always been labeled Z900; Z650; etc. So it's possible your friend has a non-US bike that someone brought back to the US (maybe a military serviceman?) back in the day. Note to myself - lay off the booze before keying.
I corrected that dumb-ass keying omission I made - should have read "Kawasaki did NOT ship KZ900 bikes to the US in 1978; 1977 was the last year in the US. Thanks for calling it to my attention. Ed

Kawasaki did not ship KZ900 or Z900 anywhere in 1978 as 1977 was the last production, and not too many of them. Who wanted a Z900 when the Z1000 was on the streets in 1977? 1978 was another story, the 900 was like a memory in time. The KZ1000 was here, 900 was in the past.
