mik3mac wrote: Hey guys kinda new to this so here I go I have a 1976 kz900 I have no idea what should be here all I know is I just put in a new battery started up and went for a fathers day ride and I started to see smoke from the front of my motor so I pulled over andi saw the little piece in the middle spinning and oil was coming out not like a stream or anything but enough for me to notice so my question is what needs to be here that isn't thanks for your time any help is much appreciated.
Hello, mik3mac, and WELCOME to KZr!
That's the tach drive unit.
A tach cable is supposed to fit between the drive and the tachometer.
The drive isn't supposed to leak any oil, even without the cable attached.
Any leaking is usually readily and inexpensively repairable by replacing the inner seal and the rubber o'ring outer seal. When ready to do this work, we can talk you through it. And there are also helpful earlier threads in KZr forum.
As a temporary leak preventive, some owners opt to seal the connection where the tach cable screws onto the tach drive, so that oil leaking from the drive past the inner drive seal collects inside the cable.
Good Fortune!
