I think it is a KZ400J model. It uses almost everything the KZ550A has, except the pistons, crank, cylinders camshafts and cam-timing gears. The ignition timing may be slightly different as well.
I think it uses TK21 carbs which are almost the same as the TK22 carbs found on the 550's.
In my signature, I have manuals for that bike along with a note about the valve train which you should be aware of, along with cam timing notes specific to the 400.

Yes, Aaron said it is a Z400-J. He and my sister ride it 2 up all over Costa Rica and even into Guatemala They own modest properties in both area's and spend the winters there.
good info about the valve maintenance issues, although I doubt he would ever take the cover off, probably better off leaving it alone rather than chance bending valves.
