Hi Guys

I have been offered a 78 Z1R turbo for less than 3500Dollars, when I research they seem to be worth a lot more?

The bike is is in original condition, pale blue color and is not immaculate but well looked after. It runs perfectly.

Does anyone have any advice for me on if its a good bike to try add to my stable?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Paul

I don't know how it could be documented as original very easily. In my opinion all the original TCs were that black Molly paint job. Books say they built about the same number of TCs in original Z1R color as black, but I always kind of find it odd I've seen and known at least 15 different TCs, all of them black Molly, just whithin a couple hundred mile radius of Denver, and never seen or known one guy with an original silver one in all these years. Whatever though, it should be worth the $3500 if it is anywhere near a decent bike, but in my opinion the TC was a very big piece of utter crap as a street bike. As a racer maybe, street-no I don't want to go back there again.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

A Moly sold on e-bay last year, all original and BURNT! went for over $5000! The first turbo Z1R I rode was the blue as were all the mollys were before they were painted to increase sales.
$3,500, WAY cheap for a real turbo, almost to the point there isn't any way you could convince me it's real without the original paperwork to back it up. Still cheap if it isn't a real TC!

For $3500 you could take the turbo kit off, sell it for $1500, and sell the bike as a stock Z1R for $4500. For that price I don't see how you could lose if the bike is generally in good shape.

As for verification, there are rumors that a master list of all frame numbers converted to Z1R TCs exists, but whoever has it is hiding it. Otherwise there is no easy way to confirm that a TC is original since they all started out as stock '78 Z1-R bikes and were then shipped to TCC for modification. It comes down to finding someone who knows exactly what the TC parts should look like who can verify that everything looks correct.

From what I've seen recently, even with zero documentation, a Z1R with any working turbo setup should sell for a lot more than $3500. Like maybe 3 times that much.
