I do not know if anyone has mention this or not... But the KZ1000P-17 is a FAT PIG!!!

Today, I decided to give it a good clean... That upper fairing has to weight some 65-70 lbs... The saddlebags and guard are like 25 lbs each... The rear bumper(?) is a good 10 lbs...

The previous guy apparently did ZERO maintenance on this bike... I spend a good 3 hours on the chain... Removed the left shock and got to clean until the kerosene was coming clear.

The chain seems to be a Kawasaki ZZR1200 530 chain EK50 ZVX2. The Rear Sprocket looks like new and it's 46 tooth...

Engine degreaser and lots of Simple Green... Then a careful rinse with the power washer... Being careful not to get the electrical parts too wet... Then dried with pressure air...

These foot platforms I would like to replace with rear sets...

But there is not a lot of options where to mount rearsets...

:D Luis

You're spoiled by all this modern machinery.

Put it in perspective, think back to what this bike was up against in the early 80s.

You were around back then, right?

Think you got it tough? At least you're starting with a bike that's all in one piece!

That is my other bike 352 lbs with a fuel tank of fuel... I guess I am spoiled rotten!!!

The KZ1000P is a 1998... But I understand it probably did not change much since 1977, (I was Born Sep 1977)

I know this is not an ultra high performance machine... It's a nice Motorcycle!!! This bike will probably not see forged wheels, billet alloy machined parts, titanium hardware, or carbon fiber. ...But I am going to put this KZ1000 on a diet!!! :)

I think I can easily shave 100 lbs of unnecessary equipment not needed outside of Police service... After my cleaning the motorcycle, I put it all back together, including the 5 lbs chain guard... :) But I am getting ideas to get the most out of the motor.

:) Luis

When I picked up mine the brakes were locking down ,had to lube the brake rotors. The chain was too tight because of ,the swing arm being cracked, front left ,and that god awful fairing in the way when you push it by yourself! Pictures of dissasembly.

Luis, I'm afraid you're only going to be disappointed with this ancient machine, and I'm a little confused about what you're doing with it in the first place.

I'm building mine into a touring rig, not that much of a stretch: Big, comfy seat, floorboards, big fairing, heavy duty charging system, etc.

Old bikes are heavy and slow compared to modern bikes, sure, but they're simple and fairly cheap.

Ponch will never beat a Panigale around the Nurburgring... but it doesn't have to.

Oh I still think it will be a fun bike... Not just to ride but also to work on it... Especially once I review every part and bolt on the chassis and re-engineer it to my liking... :) I had to stop my self from buying parts today, because I actually want to have have a clearer idea of what I want...

I think I want lighten it up a bit first, I know the Police fairing is going to come off. I am definitely going with a simple round headlight... I saw a KZ1000 LTD front fender I like much better than the KZ1000P front fender.

I am going to hold off to front end and rear end conversions... But, I am going to work with the suspension... Firm it up a little. I am buying some ZRX1200R adjustable KYB shocks... These look to be a simple bolt on operation.

If I am not mistaken the stock fork spring rate is 0.620 kg/mm. I am probably going to install stiffer springs on the front... I think with 1.0 kg/mm springs the bike will handle better and wont dive as much when I brake. Also a Gold Valve Cartridge Emulator kit from Racetech would be a good call.

This will keep me busy for a little bit...

I would like modern brakes, and steel braided brake lines...
I would like to remove the big foot rests, in favor of standard foot pegs and foot controls...
I would like lower handlebars...

This looks nice too... :) Luis

Something to consider when fitting the LTD fender. The LTD bikes all had leading axle forks and your police model has the axle center mounted. It may not center the fender over the tire properly. Also I believe that the police front end has a wider spacing between the fork tubes than a normal KZ. Not saying you can't fit it, but it might not be an easy bolt in. Good luck with your project.

How, hi are you. this is chief wampum of the throttlefeather tribe I wanted to ask you what you think of those handlebars. they appear similar to mine. I don't like them that much, they hurt my wrist being so close together.

Police does training and practice those curses on a regular basis... It is very impressive!!!
