And was that 125 Hodaka a "Road Toad" or the "Dirt Squirt"? My neighbor had the Dirt Squirt and it was a fun little bike if you could keep it running. :)

I'm curious about what's bad with the XT and also what made the DT better than the WR! Other than the XT600 being worn out it was a bike that gave me great pleasure. I know there are very little in common between the 500 and 600, but the XT was very popular in its time.

I got the DT400 December of 1976 brand new for $900 on closeout! What a bike for it's time. I just turned 16 and was eager to ride the streets and grew up the previous 6 or 7 years on dirt bikes. The DT400 was plenty powerful enough to ride the streets, and although heavier than my previous 1976 DT175 it did great in dirt too. We had unbelievable dirt here in Denver back in 1976, as a kid we could ride up the tracks to the mountains and ride trails all day. Memorys I'll never forget. Well I rode the DT400 everywhere and had 14,000 miles on it in a little over a year and had near zero issues with it. I got the bright idea though that a 4 stroke would be better. Never needing to fill the oil tank seemed like a good idea, and the 4 stroke would last a great deal more than a 2 stroke. 14,000 on a bike seemed a lot back then. I was looking to ride more. So I get the 77 XT500. First thing I notice is it's like 100lbs more than a DT400, so my beloved trails were now more a chore than fun, then I get like 1500 miles on it and it uses quite a bit of oil, nearly like a 2 stroke, so I really didn't accomplish much in my upgrade, then after 4000 miles the brackets for the rear signals broke and I was trying to fabricate my own brackets and finally come to the realization this bike is a big letdown, plus styling left a lot to be desired. I got a hammer out and got all angry and finally beat the signals to their death. My dad was not all that happy with this, but he had a 1974 RD350 Yamaha with 2000 miles on it, he also didn't like, so we pooled our money in 1978 and bought the new 1978 KZ650B2. Well in other words he bought it and we traded in the two POS bikes. Finally in 2009 after reading all the great write ups on the WR250R I buy one hoping to go back to a kid. The fuel injection is 10x worse than even a 35yr old carb was my first observation, then I ride for a few miles on the rock hard tiny width seat sitting right on the strap and say, wow in a bad way. I go to buy a case of beer and find no way to tie anything on this thing, get the little wolf tailpack hoping to at least be able to tie on a small item or two, but to no avail. The bike has no power unless wrapped up to 10,000 rpms, no provision for luggage, rediculous seat. The odometer reads like 50 when you're going 35. I had 600 miles on it and the chain was already nearly shot, tires half gone. All this with no comfort. No fun. The DT400 was fun.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Written like that, it makes sense :D

I want a D-P bike to go together with the KZ650. Last year, I owned and rode a Yamaha XT600 Tenere. Liked the concept, but the bike was abused and just about everything other than the engine was more or less used up. It wasn't worth putting right, I considered, but I think I was wrong. Should have sold the boring Honda VT500 Ascot instead. Which I will. But I think I want a smaller dirtbike instead, KL250 or XL250/350. Not allowed to ride in the dirt, it's mostly gnarly gravel roads (as well as regular, secondary roads) that the wheels will roll over. But I still like the idea of a small, nimble and simple bike with suspension to handle potholes.
