I have done it all ways and come spring drain gas put fresh gas in a little seafoam and ride.
I have an old beat up tank with no petcock no cap and it been dry as a bone for 2 years sits in my yard barn and the inside is as clean as it was the day I put it out there. Sealed moisture IE: H2O and oxygen is your enemy for rust. evaporated fuel in the bowls turns to varnish in the carbs.
I have heard the same remedies as you. my goldwing sat outside last year with a tarp on it with half a tank ogf gas no stabil and with a light battery charge fired right up in the spring a can of seafoam and a long ride then new gas. rides 60 miles a day all spring and summer
im in western KY so we get alot of extremes in temp humidity and snow ice If someone has a text book version of the best storage I am interested as well

Personally i've never had a problem storing a bike without ever adding fuel stabilizer but everyone will feel comfortable with their own methods. I've heard the 'Oil down the plughole' is a good idea, if you do it make sure you turn the engine over a couple of times so it coats the barrels.

This keeps cylinder walls, cams, etc. lubed; prevents varnish in the carbs, and keeps the battery charged. Oh, and it makes you happy to hear it run and know Spring is just around the corner. I've done it this way since the bike was new (1977) and it has never caused a problem. Ed
no fan on it?
or just cold weather?

No fan. As long as the temp is 40-45F or below I don't think it's an issue, at least it never has been for me. Keep in mind, my bike is a stock KZ650 that idles at 1,000 rpm. There may be issues with engines that have been modified or that idle at high rpms. Ed

lol yeah i'm thinking draining the fuel is safer, but I may have her talked into the christmas tree idea in front of the picture window some new LED's few ornaments presents stacked around it. but either way should drain the tank I suppose. and get those 3 year old fireworks out of that closet
