Killer RPM while cruising? was created by miles
Hello to all. I recently dug out my moms original 1978 KZ 400B1 with 5K miles on it. Had the carbs worked got a new battery and replaced the rectifier, all the blown lightbulbs, a missing gas cap and I'm still looking for a headlight. The bike has been sitting since 1991 so I put in new plugs cleaned the tank changed the oil and lubed the chain.

I took the bike for a cruise down the road and it seems the rpm is around 6500 at 70mph. Next time I take it for a ride I will note the exact rpm and speed. My question is.... will it hurt the bike to run that high of an rpm for an extended anount of time? We are getting ready for a 600 mile round trip.

That sounds about right to me although I own a 900. Also make sure your tires arent cracked, that can kill you!

Hopefully someone with a KZ400 will chime in, but that sounds high to me. Are you sure your clutch isn't slipping? On my KZ650-C1 4,500 rpm = 60 mph; 6,000 rpm = 80 mph. If you look in the front of the Kawasaki factory service manual you should find a graph that may help. Ed

Likely find some comparisons regarding highway cruising rpm in the following site.
