Grage find 1980 KZ1000 LTD was created by Tariff
Recently I got in touch with a old friend in the autobody business.anyway 20 or so yesrs ago he bought a KZ 1000 LTD,rode it a few summers....started a family and parked the bike in the gragae for the past 20 years (he pickled it properly).I figured I would ask you guys about opening offers on the bike because here mentioned around to selling it to me.What I liked about it is that it was low milage and was completely stock,he also had all the original paperwork with the bike (from the dealer to the owners manua) in mint shape.
I wanted the bike as a rider not a museum piece.
You guys have allot more knowlage then I do so I thought I would ask.
What do you you guys sugest as a opening price and when to call it quits?
The mechanical stuff Im ccapable of and the machine is not running at this time.Although thr engine kicks over smoothly and overall the bike is spotless even the underside!
So what do yo think would be a reasonal first offer and top price I should dish out.
Serious responses please.........but a few jokes are cool!   Tariff

When I bought my 81 KZ1000 CSR it wasn't running... The bike had ~10,000 miles and had been garaged for about 5 years. The guy was asking $1600, I offered $1000. I ended up paying $1250...
Recently, I paid $700 for a non-running converted 1994 KZ1000 P, however, the bike in question is the one shown in my avatar.
Best of luck
Grant.

It is difficult to assess 'sight unseen'...rephrased, with no pictures. The market is all over the place and I've seen complete bikes go for (similar to wireman) US$500 and very nice restorations go for US$8000...the mere fact it is a non-runner really knocks back the price.

I agree a non-running is questionable,it could have been parked for lost of interest as his wife started producing babys.Maybe dirty carbs,worn/bent internals and a whole list of parts that wore out and now all needed to be replaced at around the same time.
Or the dreaded show off/watch this holeshot destruction of bent con rods, bent valve stems,or general lack of engine maintence.
It could be a major rebuild project,or he just got bored of riding (not a true fanatic as I am!)..........either way I will keep in touch with him and set up a look-see at the bike.
Who knows what other bike treasures lurk in his grarage! Anyway that 1000Kz gives me reason to pursue the quest.I will try and keep KZr informed on the progress. Just so you know I am not afraid of a nut and bolt resto to showroom condition or the oil&rag treatment if its in good shape!! Tariff

Offer him $500 in non running condition. Clean the carbs and she will fire right up. The Kaws are pretty resilient bikes and have a history of firing up after a long sit, that is if it was not beat on before hibernation.

+1

My fathers Z was parked for 14+ years. He stored it properly 'mechanically'. When we got her running all we did was squirt some oil down each cylinder and gave it a few slow, easy kicks. I clearly remember hearing the rings "click" and free up. Installed new plugs, oil/filter, new battery and some fresh gas. Had it running perfectly in about an hour.

Now, the reason I said 'mechanically' is, I'm not even sure there is a way to prevent it but, the original paint was mint. I mean MINT. After some time, few months, out in the open the clear coat lifted and the paint began to fade pretty quickly.

Make a long story short, during the restoration of the bike there were a few things you need to look out for. For one, some engine seals began to leak like the shift shaft seals, tack drive and generator grommet (don't know if your bike has all this stuff). I rebuilt the carbs but the kits didn't come with the little o-rings for the bowl drain screws and they began to leak. You'll definately need tires and tubes. The fork oil will need to be changed. I had a slight amount of rust in my tank that I cleaned up using mineral spirits and a small length of chain and sloshed it around. OH! You'll have to remove and clean the steel clutch disks of tarnish and you'll probobly want to install new cables and brake pads. Change the brake fluid too. The fluid in my front master was nasty as all hell, I just kept flushing it out with new fluid and it's been fine so far. (knock on wood) Check and lube the swingarm, wheel and steering bearings. Spray some WD in the switch housings and clean the throttle tube.

Good luck! I love finds like these, any pics?
