what's the best venue for parting a bike out? was created by newOld_kz1000
Hi all - I have never sold a parted out bike before.

I know full well that ebay has the biggest audience. But ebay is a pick-pocket of sellers these days. ebay is fine if you have a high-demand bike you're parting out, such as a Kaw H2-750 or a 1973 Z1-900 and the parts are in good shape.

But for anything else, ebay is a crapshoot with painful fees to pay just for the *chance* to sell. And selling prices for parts on ebay has dropped (bigtime) over these recession years (I know that because I buy parts for the few bikes I have).

So I may have to part out an uneconomical-to-get-running-again Kz650 and would like to hear 'war stories' of the best venues for selling parts that, while maybe not having a nationwide audience, at least you can list for awhile without paying listing fees every time you list.

So have yall had success with
- kijiji
- craigslist
- anything else?

Plain and Simple. EBAY!
Ebay has a local classified also! Did you know that Ebay owns Craigslist also?
And you can list it on your local Craigslist!
Ebay is about 15% after paypal! So after making $100, your giving them $15.
Check out "oinkjohnson" on ebay, he does Kaw and Suzuki drag bike stuff every day! A little high, a little low, It all averages out!
Or you are getting nothing with the stuff sitting in your garage or cellar!
You are correct, prices are down! And only getting worse with gas going to $4.00 a gallon.
I have 4 KZ's and a drag bike roller. I want $10,000 for everything! Nuts and Bolts, rusted parts! If I listed it it, You Guys would Laugh at me!

My opinion!

eBay is still the best bet.

I have a 650 and I am going to take it to Ohio with me this July and sell the parts to Gringo.

Yep, that Gringo will buy anything!

Back on topic:

eBay is about it. I have been listing parts everywhere else for months, and am finally getting done. I'm going to list the last few parts on eBay if no one buys them soon.

sounds like ebay is still a favorite. I dont get why its the go-to place after all the seller pick pocketing I have heard, what I mean is where is a competitor taking advantaged of ebays poor treatment of sellers.

Case in point. over the past 4 years I exceeded $10,000 in purchases of bike/parts on ebay. All that time I had 3 credit cards approved to use on paypal:

1) paypal's 24% annual interest mastercard
2) my usaa visa card, 10% interest
3) my b of a visa card, 10% interest

Late last year I cancelled the 24% card thinking I didn't need it. I called paypal and said 'close this account.' They simply said 'will do.'

6 weeks go by and I win an ebay auction for a bike part and go to pay -- and paypal would not let me pay.

The error message said 'you have exceeded $10,000 and need to get Verified.'

I called paypal and besides asking them why they didn't warn me when I cancelled the 24% paypal card, I asked them 'what is 'getting verified' anyway, what do I have to do to use paypal again'

Paypal said:
1) "re-apply and get the 24% card again"
2) "or give us your bank routing number and account number. We will then over a period of a few days make small deposits into your bank account then withdraw the ammounts. When that succeeds, you are Verified."

I said fuck that and will not re-get that 24% card nor give them access to my bank account.

So with both ebay raping sellers, and paypal playing games, I dont get why a big competitor isn't there to treat customers better.

Persuade the Venture Capitalists to provide about $25 million in financing and start your own online auction site.

I'll be cheering you on, I intensely dislike eBay.

It's like living in a town with one hooker, where else you going to go?
