Topper, the switch at the clutch lever is a starter interlock. The clutch lever switch and the starter button both must be activated to power the relay to activate the starter. The twin has enough torque to start in gear with the starter, bike pointed into the garage, in gear, hit starter, bike fires and starts, not a good situation.

I now know what a previous owner installed clutch switch bypass jumper looks like.

I did it!!

Woohoo! That was a great feeling. I needed to get some basic body coordination down to give it a full kick and not loose my balance.

To any fellow noobs who may be struggling with this, one thing that really helped me was holding on to the brake lever. There's not really any totally flat surface around my place and every time I tried to kick the bike it would move a little, then a little more... Makes it pretty hard to keep your balance and give it a good full powered kick.

Holding the brake lever reduced the tendancy of the bike to shift a little with each kick.

Thanks for all the help guys. Believe it or not this feels like a major accomplishment. The fact that I kick started my bike on a day when it's 32 degrees outside and there's snow on the ground makes me feel ever so slightly like less of a noob.

Permanent and perpetual noob.
