cheap bike ?

hey i got a chance to buy a suzuki gs 550 1982 for 100 bucks. i know th ecarbs are junk on it. does anyonme know if the carbs of a kz will work on it. i have to kz;s i love and i hate to ask a suzuki? but i have no one else to ask and does anyone know if these bikes were decent

suzuki builds a tough bike.when they came up with the performance over all slogan they werent kidding about certain models,apearance was way back there! :laugh: although i must admit to being a sucker for 82-83 gs1100 series bikes

Have encountered more than one gs550 with rod knock. Can you hear it run at all? For a hundred bucks, at least it's not a huge gamble. You could always get your money back by parting it out if the motor is totally shagged.

well no i cant here it run because the carbs are shot. the guy said he rode it home form wherever he bought it form about 5 yrs ago but had to run it on choke the hole time and that the throttle wa shard to twist and im guisin so caus ehwen he showed me the carbs the slides seem like they were frozen up. thats why iwas wondeirng if carbs off a kz would work cause i have to sets of em one off a 1000 and one of a 550 kz soi dont knwo i knwo the guy to an exstaent but i dont know if i beilive everythin he says but the bikes been sitting in the back of the garae for 5 yrs he says

i had a 1980 gs 550, Mikuni CV (constant velocity) carbs, i just cleaned them out. If your CV diaphrams arent ripped they will probably work after a good cleaning, and adjustment. you just take off the top plate of the carbs, 4 screws, those are your diaphrams.

i dont know if kz carbs will work, maybe. TK 22's might, as those are on alot of the kz 550's. and they are not CV's.its worth a try if it isnt too much trouble... Boot fitment is the main issue.

yeah i dont know if they are but i think thats what i have is the tk carbs. anyways whatcha guys think buy it for the 100 bucks

post some pics on this thread man, i think its a good deal. i traded an 8 foot fiberglass boat that was sitting in my yard for 15 years for my gs 550. and it had a title...so i bobbered it out.

This may be worthless, but.. there was a suz 550 which had dual dual cv carbs which in mho were junk..all others were simply subject to the typical foibles all old carbs are heir to. for the price, I'd take the risk, & go to carb land before playing swap games. G

Get up on the www.thegsresources.com and do some diggin'. They have a large section on carb rebuilds for many of the GS series...see what even more GS owners say...but a hundred bucks is certainly pretty enticing :)

the old school two valve gs550 were tough little bikes and really could be made to rip...imo.....

you never see any of the newer motor syle gs550es types these days...what does that tell you....

well guys heres some pics of the ride i picked her up today




she has 9000 origniol miles but the carbs are all varnished. it has the mikunis on it any ideas on if cabs off a kz 550 will work on it just to see if it runs

yeah, She's a beaut... Why not unhook the carbs, put them in to soak and while you're waiting, juice up the battery. If you get the electrical up before the carbs are freed up, Hit it with just a little ether to see if it fires off. If it does, I'd spend the time in the carbs and put it back up and running.
