Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a 78 KZ1000 police bike. The guy said it has been sitting for years (maybe since 2000) and doesn't have a title for it. He does have a plate on the bike and the old registration.
He said he got it off his uncle who had it on the road and stored it back in 05'. He said he's looking to get around $650 for it or best offer. What do you think? Is it worth it to have to do a title search? I'm all for working on it and repairing it if i can get a title.

When I got my Cop bike, it had been sitting in a collection for seventeen years. It only had 11,400 miles on it and hadn't been abused like some of the ex Cop bikes out there. I took the blue lights out of the fairing and converted them to headlights. Replaced the windshield 'cause it still said POLICE on it and I couldn't remove it. Changed the swing arm bearings and the hub bearings and the wheel bearings. I changed the sprockets and chain, and put new tires on it. A little new paint and I got me a great KZ old school bagger that's just now starting to be broken in. Offer him $500 bucks and tell him you'll need the rest of your money to get it on the road

Don't know what state your in, but I was able to register a '79 650 in CA without a title. The bike was last registered in 2002, and I had to pay registration fees and some penalties to get it back in the system. If you have the VIN or the license plate number, your DMV may be able to do a search on it, and tell you what it'll cost to register. If you (or a friend) has AAA Autoclub, they'll do the check for you, too.

You can register it online in vermont without indurance. A no title state, Vermont registration has assignment section to transfer ownership. Antique plate is 25 bucks plus sales tax. 78 C1 cost 81 bucks and they mailerd me plate and registration. Take that to your dmv and tell them it is from a no title state and they give you a clean title and regisyration. Cheaper than title service that does exactly same thing.
