aircooled gixxer 11OO was created by 9am53
From looking at the eBay thread I saw that GSX1100R, I went and did some research on it, and the last example of the old school aircooled bike was in the early 90's I believe. This bike had almost 150 hp!!! Is it strichtly the 16 valve motor that gives this bike so much more power than the 85 GPz11? or am I missing something

Don't forget that those 1100's are oil cooled as well. I think that contributes a little. Peak hp on the GSXR is a 10000 rpm and the GPZ is 9000. HP=(torque x rpm)/5252. Given two motors producing the same torque output, the one with the torque peak at a higher rpm will have a higher horsepower number. That extra 1000rpm aids the GSXR here.

The GPZ1100 was rated at 120HP at only 8700rpm. The HP gos up exponentially with RPM. Plus there was a lot of embellishment on the HP ratings back than.

doesn't oil cooled just mean the same thing as air cooled though? I suppose that you are right about the rpm though...

gixxer
Compression: 11.2 : 1
Bore x stroke: 75.5 x 60.0 mm

GPz

Bore x Stroke, Ø72.5 mm x 66.0 mm

Just looking at the stroke ratio the gixxer is more oversquare...I guess it's just an all around more modern aircooled bike, but I would guess the GPz would sound better :)

The more over square you go the lighter you can make the crank and the connecting rod deflection angle is lower so the higher you can run the RPM. The torque drops dramatically though pound per pound, but the efficiency gos up.

cool. So I think it would be more similar to riding a new rocket than the GPz would be. I like torque because I am fat, so the gixxer is not for me I think.

The GSXR's actually have a factory installed oil cooler, like a radiator. Just like you would have as an aftermarket oil cooler on your KZ when you build a higher displacement, hotter running engine.

X2 for everything that otakar says about oversquare. Look at a formula one engine some time.

The oil cooled bikes were very sought after by the drag racers because of their lightness and their high RPM. I take my GPz1150 to 10,500rpm all the time and have never had a problem. I don't even have a welded crank. If you want REAL torque than the KZ1300 is the bike. It is drastically under-square at 62mm x 71mm and has a 8500 red line. 120HP @ 8000 & 11.8kG/M (85.5 #/') @6500rpm  that is brutish. I love my thirteens. The the 83/84 GPz1100 only had 73.5 #/' of torque. The ZX14 has 100#/' of torque @8000rpm.

That oil cooler is about the same size as a radiator on a modern bike. It is huge.

Available as the Bandit 1200 until 2006. Dale Walker had 150 at the rear wheel, and there were a lot more fellows running bigger numbers than that. Dales' is a Street Bike.

150 HP @ 96 ft-lbs torque at rear wheel (best dyno pull) 1/4 mile 9.70 ET., 141 mph...

id say 150 hp stock is pretty optimistic, maybe 130ish.

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

I had a 93 gsxr1100w, water and oil cooled was new for 93. After putting on a gp pipe and having stage 2 kits put in the carbs that bike put down 134 hp at the rear wheel. Dyno numbers before the work were only at 122 rear wheel hp. That bike was stupid fast though!!!!
