Which KZ 550 Would be the Best Deal? was created by dlarnold
I have opportunity to purchase a 1980 KZ550 Ltd with 15,000 miles for $800 or a 1984 KZ550 Ltd with 40,000 miles for $1,000! Which would be the best deal and why?
Both look good and are in "good running condition"
Thanks
David

1980, fewer miles and 200.00 never hurts. If both are in similar condition and run well, the most you can hope for is a .5hp upgrade between the 80 and 84, and that will be gone after 40k miles anyways.

THe 84 will have the CV carbs which are hard to get parts for. Also, if the diaphragms are torn, they are like $100 each. The 1980 LTD carbs are super simple and plentiful on ebay. They are also much easier to jet if you change the exhaust etc. You can get rebuild kits easily and can even get a upgrade kit from Dynojet for the 1980.
The electronic ignition is cheaper and simpler on the 1980 and easier to get parts for.
Is the 84 shaft or chain? Shaft will be more expensive to fix if it needs work, but I don't know if they typically do.
If they both appear to be in about the same condition, I'd get the 1980. But look closely for any frame alignment issues to make sure one wasn't in a crash etc.
