Hola Alexgutim! Excellent photo and great information on the frame numbers. There is almost no information on the numbers of old Kawasakis in South America...

Quick question for those of you with z1r's. Are the brake caliper rebuild kits the same as the regular z1 calipers? The same question goes for the fuse box. Although, I think I may just get one step ahead of the game and install a modded one that works better.

The '78 Z1-R uses a smaller piston than most of the other KZ1000 models, so a regular KZ1000 rebuild kit won't have the correct piston seal. I'm not sure what size piston the Z1 used, but the Z1-R uses a 38mm piston, while most Kz1000s use a 42mm.

Z1 Ent. sells the 38mm piston seal as a separate part. See the notes on this page.

As for the fuse box, if you don't mind modifying the fuse box, modern automotive style fuses are much better. I melted the fuse clips off of two stock fuse boxes so far.

I used an inline fuse holder like this to replace the 20A fuse on my bike:

The Kawasaki on-line parts diagram system is very helpful with these cross-reference questions.

The fuse box on the '78 Z1R was not used on any other KZ1000 model. It looks like it was borrowed from the KZ650 instead.

The database lists the following models for fuse box part number 26004-1002. The Z1R is the only 1000 model.

Thanks for the information! So, there is a fuse box that would work that I previously thought wouldn't work on my bike. But the question is...my bike may have an 80 front end on it. It may actually be an 80 with an older motor, or it may be an 80 motor with pre emission head, (I know this can't be cause they had the MKII motors by then so the oil fill would have had an extra fin which it doesn't like my 80 LTD does). Hmmmm, Now, I dunno. Guess if I take it off and put a picture up you guys would be able to identify it. Getting so excited to finally get this bike on the road and ride but I want to do it right and that fuse box is a hot mess, no pun intended. :whistle:

Just post the frame number on the steering head, and the serial number on the engine, and it will be easy to tell what year it is. Or better yet, both should start with KZT00D, and if the numbers are below about 017390 you have a 78 frame and engine.

For the fuse box, under the left side cover the '78 has a connector block with four connectors, each one a different color (blue, green, white, brown). This is sort of the central hub of the electrical system. The '80 has a simplified harness and does not include this connector block. If you see this connector block, you should have a '78 wiring harness and need a '78 fuse box.
