When the GS1100 came out it quickly dominated the big block arena. One very fast bike for sure! ;)

IIRC they had some electrical issues like the smaller GS's but the one I rode was striped down for racing, don't think it had a stator or regulator. It had been blown up a few times, but the owner said they were pretty tough. They are a very stout bike, yeah it will haul ass.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

they use a helical cut gear set-up on the primary drive if you start throw lots of power thru it they will try to push the drives apart so just beaware of that (don't get to crazy with it to begin with.)most times at the track the wheelie bar bikes will be kz's or gs's so obviously they are a good combo to use. lots of race parts available.

My GS1100 is pretty much stock, yet is quicker than the 1166 GPZ i used to have, so it should rock your world...:) They ARE known for clutch issues - baskets, and stators arent the best either. I got lucky and bought a nice unabused one, hope yours is a good one too...

It looks like a 1982 or 83 by the picture, 1984 they went to the GS1150 that was not near as good looking.
I had a 1981 GS1100 at one time. Liked it, but to me it just never fit in like the old Kawasakis, can't really explain why. I have a friend who rides a lot, he's got something like 100,000 on a Harley 883 sportster, even did like 50,000 on a 1973 Kawasaki H2 without a rebore. Among these bikes he had a 1980 GS1100 he bought new and put 100,000 on it. Told me it was dead reliable except for one "minor" annoyance. He said to go 100,000 miles he had over $1500 invested in replacement stators. This was back in the late 80s. Told me it took 5 stator replacements in 100,000 miles. Later he told me the Harley has been his most reliable motorcycle ever, with the H2 as honorable mention, Suzuki best engine ever, but with the stator problems kind of an "iffy" motorcycle in the electrics dept.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have been doing some research on the gs forum, and the stator is mentioned quite often. Somebody on the site is offering a modern unit to replace the suzuki unit. Hopefully i dont have to drop a bunch of money into this bike right away but i guess i will do whatever it takes to make it rideable. I know what you mean when you say it just doesnt seem to fit in. Even at nice and custom gs's i look at just dont seem to do it for me like the 73-80 900/1000's do. IMO, the z's are the best looking motorcycle i have come across yet, but this one is just gona be a rider and something to help me practice at the strip before i finish my dragbike

I have both KZ's and GS's - Im sure all will agree, No one has made a bike that is such a timeless classic as the 73-80 kz 900/1000. That bike of yours looks to be an 83, which has a factory welded crank. The wheels give it away. 80 - 82 had the 5 spoke, unless canadian models were different. Sounds like you have a good plan fix the 1100 up as cheap as you can as a daily rider, you can always unload it later when you get your other bikes sorted out.
