Good Saturday afternoon all,

Good amount of snow has been dumped on us in here at central NC today that is fairly rare event for us.

Any way,I have been doing some research about how to obtain title in NC. AS you know, I just got 75 Z1-B last week without title as a part bike or to restore. It will need a lot of attention. Before I start anything, I wanted to get title issue straight.
First, I called NC DMV. The lady answered the phone keep telling me "you need to tell the person who you bought from to get a title".I had to keep telling her "he did not have a title". She asked "why he didn't have a title?". I told her "he bought it as parts bike along with 76 KZ900 with title.I want to fix it up and get it back on the road." Then she went "well you need to have a title to get title in your name. You have an option to get tittle by filing an indemnity bond but bike need to be operable."

After some research, it seems like they just have changed a law about it and now the vehicle has to be "operable". Used to be able to get inoperable title. Don't want to spend money and time to fix it up and ended up not be able to get a title by some reason.

On top of that matter as I mentioned in last post, I can not find VIN on steering head. All what is there is "made in Japan" stamped. i lightly sanded paint off but nothing. Yet doesn't even looks like anyone grinded off the numbers either. It is just smooth metal all the way around. I couldn't figure out what was going on with VIN#. Without VIN number, I feel like it will be an issue if I take "indemnity bond" route. Because Suppose to list VIN number in application and must be inspected by DMV License & Theft inspector.

researched on title service company too. Broadway title service is stating that they cannot do service for NC and some other state no more due to recent changes in state's law. I read the guy got his scooter (not moped) titled in NC by using ITS but it was in 2008 before law change and he had VIN also.

So I am thinking the only option to me is to find 75 Z1 frame with VIN and title or another whole 75 Z1 that will be a pretty long shot.

Any one has any good suggestion????

I really want to start messing with it! :(

Thank you in an advance.

Here are a few places that might be able to help. The last one kind of explains the process from each state. Good Luck

Thank you, Kawickrice.

I looked those already. Broadway can't do for NC title. ITS could been used before as in the last link you indicated.
The law has been changed since. Plus with my no VIN situation, I didn't see the way in those.

Maybe you could look in the Auto Trader magazine... there are outfits that "help" you register in another (easier) state, then you can re-register in your state. They do it all the time for all those old vehicles, with long lost titles.

Good luck !

I will grab one to see I can find them. I think ITS and Broadway do that way also.

I had a problem similar yours, I bought a KZ650 from my brother that was titled in Tenn. and when I got it to Fla. I found out the vin did not match ( Fla does a vin verification if its from another state and I guess Tenn does not) My brother died before I could get it cleared up. I tried everything possible with NO luck whatsoever. Finally a member here heard my situation and gave me a frame with a title and managed to help with shipping from one of his family members, all for free (Thanks again kawsakiman) I just got finished last month with the swap. Maybe NC law will have a loophole you could manipulate. If not a frame swap maybe your only option.

Thank you again, Kawickrice and sorry about your brother.

Yes, i am thinking getting another frame with or without title (with VIN) is the only option. With title I can do as title transfer. Without title, i can still take indemnity bond route as long as there is VIN. I think it is hard to find Z1 period. If I can put thousands of dollars it may not be. But I am just a poor working guy.

I still don't get why this one doesn't have VIN stamped.

Is there a chance the frame was powder coated? If so it may have covered up the vin stamping

My bike has a Tn. Build title.

It must be legal because it is now titled in Ky. Roy

No, it is not powder coated. I actually hit steering head with sand paper to get paint off, but no number. And it does not looks like someone shaved number off either.

IIRC, where an original frame was damaged beyond repair and a replacement frame was obtained from KHI, the new replacement frame did not have a VIN number on it.

So perhaps the existing frame is a replacement frame from the factory.

Good Luck! :)

Thank you, Roy. I will check into TN title to see if there is any chance.
