Hi all ...

I spent 2008-2009 restoring a 1977 650 B1 model into a slick little cafe bike.

NOW I find myself with another KZ, this time a 1979 650SR model. I don't know much about this variant of the KZ650 family. This particular bike only has 10,000 original miles on it and the paint/finishes/seat are in near-museum quality. The color is deep red with pinstripes.

It needs some basic stuff and a good tune-up/sorting for a bike of its age but i'm just wondering if an SR model has any particular special place in the KZ650 lineage. It's a very nice-looking machine.

It has all the original bits on it except for the chrome rails by the seat and of course the tool kit is MIA.

Toss up some pictures of both 650s. B)

It comes down to a personal preference as far as which 650 style people like.
I'm partial to the B, C and F models.

The kz650 home page has a 650SR as the Bike of the month: www.kz650.info/

And the current poll for February BOTM has a very nice SR as well; specialtee's 650: forums.kz650.info/index.php?topic=3395.0

I'll try to figure out how to post images. I have some decent digital pics of both.

My '77 I am partial to because it has "the look" - spoke wheels, single disc brake, low and long styling and the original (yes, the original!) 4-into-2 exhaust with the cigar-shaped mufflers. When i took the engine out of the frame to do all the gaskets the header pipes still had tape on the split keepers from the factory i think. Wow!

The '79 is a bit more mini superbike with the angular tank, triple discs and cast wheels. Unfortunately the stock pipe is a goner so i'll have to go with something aftermarket but the rest of the thing is in fantastic shape. They should make a nice pair when the SR is complete.
