Seven, The CBX and KZ1300 were the eras' prime examples of large, smooth "sport tourers". And for the day, were "fast", but due to large heavy 6 cyl engines were'nt very "quick" in either acceleration or handling in stock trim. small wheels/tires/brakes and rear shocks were inital limiting factors. Limited # of units insures collectability, but also limits parts availability. As an investment/restore, a definte Maybe.... as a hobby/rider, I think you'd do better with any of the 4cyl Kz's.. for the $'s and availability, the KZ650 in any of it's many Guises is my favorite, followed by the KZ550 (A series) then GPZ's 750,550,1100. in order. then, Z1,KZ900,KZ1000. Please note.. this is not my preference of bikes, Just what you may be able to restore/ride w/tight purse strings...That said, I'm not aware of any particular probs w/13's, as w/any older bike which has set, a thorough carb clean, oil/filter change,Battery, tires, and general check over.(specificly, fork seals, rear shock, tank internal, & cables) are in order. luck g

Id say it comes down to your personal prefeance.
I know the kz1300 is as fast as a kz1000. my pal had a new 1 back in the early 80's.It could keep up to my kz1135.He could wheelie it too. same with his cbx.
I love them booth,but if i wanted performance on a budget, i would buy a gpz1100.B)

I bought a new one in 79. Once I rode it I, i rode my Z1R very infrequently after that. They are totally different rides. The 13 could get up to almost 140 and sat as solid as a rock. the bike is heavy so the "off the line" quickness is a little less but god help you in mid to upper range. It is brutal. Wit a 6 into 1 exhaust it has a sound like no other bike. It is considerably more difficult to work on but I love the ride. I am at the moment punching mine out to 1400 with 11.5:1 compression. I am also building a new head with larger valves and custom cams. The bike had an honest 130Hp stock I think that it would not be too hard to push 160 out of it. The nicest part is the high speed stability of the bike.

74 Z1-A stock
76 KZ-900 Totaly stock vice MAC pipe
77 KZ-1000A stock
78 Z1-R 100%MINT 500 original Mi.
78 Z1-R Yoshi 1103 kit stage 1 cams Yoshi pipe. Etc

Seven,
If I were you and had the chance to own a KZ1300, I'd go for it. I bought one awhile back and had it tuned up, carbs cleaned and a general maint, and going over. And the only part I had to replace on it was the Stator. The CCT was brand new and had only five miles on it when it was stored over a year ago so no problem there. I love the old school bikes simply because they (to me) have personality and represent an era I grew up in. Parts for the KZ1300 may be rarer and cost more than any other KZ from what I've seen thus far, but it is worth it to me. If you want it, get it.

I tend to keep the bikes I buy. I only sold one over the years simply due to the fact I needed the money (a Triumph Trident). It was 40% restored when I sold it a friend. He completed the restoration and upgraded the carbs and exhaust system. And rode it several times a year to keep everything lubed and working. He recently sold this bike and today he informed me that the current owner has it listed on eBay. I provided the link to it below. It made me sick to see an old friend being auctioned off. :(

In fact the KZ1300 I have, I bought off the friend I sold the Triumph to. DeJa Vu?

Seven, I don't think you will regret buying the KZ1300 if you are willing to restore, ride, and enjoy the old girl.
