Good question. It looks like Ma Kaw made a bunch of different 750 models in '83 (LTD chain drive, LTD belt drive, LTD Shaft, Spectre, Ninja, and the L3). It may be that they didn't make a bunch of the L3 model because they had so many other 750 models. Then they discontinued the KZ750 the next year. I don't know if the production figures are available for 1983, but maybe someone on this site knows where to find them. Ed

I picked this one up a couple of years ago. When I got it someone had taken the carbs and cams out (it looked like they started to do a valve adjustment and never finished). I put it back together and got it running but I don't think I've put much more than 100 miles on it since, because I hate the low handlebars. The L-3's run really strong, they are basically left over 82 GPZ 750's other than a few small differences they are the same bike. The PO painted mine and added the fairing and a Kerker exhaust.

1983 was when (IMO) motorcycling really started changing. That was the initial time of 'faired' bikes, all the Japanese manufacturers were beginning to introduce v-twins, and interest was declining, in general. It was the time that the KZ line was doomed...and the ZX line was brand new...and the v-twins...the bane of motorcycling...alas. I suspect that not very many were made.

Nice Bike! wish mine looked that good.

As to the 750/700 L models form Kawasaki

If you take a look at the shop manual, you'll see that Kawasaki made and L1,L2,L3 and yes an L4 model throughout the 80s. One thing to note, the only one in the states was the L3 and the L4 which was very much like the KZ700A4

Take a look at pages and 277,322,369 of the Bible kz.mbsween.com/media/GPz750-full.pdf and you see pics of the various bikes.

You can also find a good information here www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki_KZ750L

The L3 was the first year fro the states. Standard models are not very popular in the states so you usually see low volumes. They sell great in Europe, maybe because Europeans tend to use bikes for transportation as well as recreation. So the L1, and L2 were sold there (and Canada I believe). As to the 82 GPz (KZ750R1) I'd bet that was a hotted up L2.

I own both an 82 GPz and a 83 L3. Bikeas are identical with the exception of the 1/4 fairing, clip on bars, gauges and black chrome engine covers and exhaust (on the 82).

As to maintenance, engine parts are easy, most of the 81-84 KZ750 parts are the same as are a fair amount of stuff from the 83-85 GPz. I've used gaskets from the 2003 ZR7S (valve cover) that fit. Body parts are tough, you have three years to pick from: 82 KZ750R1 (GPz), 83 KZ750L3, 84 KZ700A1. the body work from the L2 model would fit, but I've never seen any in the states. The 81 and 82 1000 models (I think they were labeled GPZ) fit as do the 82-84 ELR s but you need to make some modifications.

Finally here is a short quote on the subject.

Enjoy the bike, you probably won't see another one outside of AMA vintage days (that would be me) !

Produced for model year 1983, the 'Kawasaki KZ750 L3' was very similar to the 1982 Gpz750. This is the year during which the Gpzs made the jump towards "sportbikes", while the KZ line branched off as "sport cruisers". This model can be distinguished by the three horizontal stripes along the gas tank and tailpiece, orange, red and yellow, and the lack of fairing typical on GPZ bikes of the same era. The Kawasaki inline-four engines are considered very robust and reliable. Therefore, this motorcycle, and others with similar engines, are sought after for their rideability and repairability.
