Well, I've been working on getting this bike track only for more than a year now, and this past weekend was spent at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA More than 280 miles on the 3.0 Mile Circuit for both Saturday and Sunday.

Here's a link to the on-bike videos:

You can see more by logging into my youtube CoreyDSFA

I spent the money for 2 dyno runs, and that was very interesting information, before and after the adjustments.

About 100 F at 4:30pm day 1

Day 1 and 2 Horsepower and Fuel

Here's the bike's statistics:
-1985 GPz550
-APE Stock Rebuilt and Hand-Ported Brian Daigle Head. Actually finger-ported and polished, with combustion chamber hand or finger polished by Mr. Daigle.
-Stock ZX550 Cam, non-slotted sprockets
-Accel Coils and Wires
-NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
-Freshly broken in New Kawasaki Standard Bore Rings, and a clean-up hone cylinders I did myself.
-91 Octane Pump Gas, 76 is my choice. No racing fuel needed or ever used.
-Stage 3 Jetted TK27 Carbs, with 3.5 turns out on the mixture screws, slide offset hole enlarged, needle clip on 4th from top, and 134 Main Jets as the instructions call for
-K&N Pod Filters
-Moriwaki Race Exhaust
-15/42 Gearing with o-ring chain
-Avon AM22 DOT Race 110/80-18 front and Avon AM23 DOT Race 130/650-18 rear.

The first Day 1 Dyno Runs were as everything above is described, and Kevin at MCE Racing then explained to me what he saw, and what he would like to see for the engine to run better. The air/fuel was his main concern, and at 15, that was too lean for an oil cooled engine. He wanted it to be closer to 13. Richening it up the mid section, would help it to run cooler, and make more torque. He said to run the mixture screws 5 turns out(I set them to 4.0 just for another adjustment if needed), and move the clips down 2 more notches, this will raise the needle, allowing for a richer mixture. The mixture screws not only help with idle and slight off-idle, Kevin says, but on decel, and engine breaking, it can lean or richen up the mixture as well. More turns out is more air and less fuel. People always tell me the engine is smoking on the track during, and it's the fuel mixture, causing it to be so rich on decel, so more turns out will add more air.

The last two graphs are then next morning, and after I adjusted the mixture screws, and lowered the slide needle clips(raised the needles) 2 positions. You can see that the air/fuel ratio richened up quite a bit, and the line is almost flat(see numbers on the side), and I also gained more torque, and a few ponies loss on top. He recommended I replace the 134 Main with a 133, and the loss on top would come back. I chose to leave it alone, and do this another day, when I can get the 133.

I found it very interesting, and a good learning experience to dyno my bike.

55.6 Hp @ 11,000 rpm(still not falling off) and 32.2 Torque @ 7,300 rpm initially, to 54.6 Hp @ 11,000 rpm, and 32.1 Torque @ 7,500 rpm. If anything, this tells me where I should be up or down shifting in the corners, and when I get to post the video's after they are finished downloading, you'll see and hear the engine scream out that Moriwaki Race Exhaust, singing a beautiful note.

This one scared the crap out of me, and I thought for sure I was going down in this video, but I guess it's not my time yet.

I have no idea, and if I was watching the tach or speedometer, then that would be another reason why I went off. Maybe 5th gear there, and at about 7,000 rpms, but somewhere I'm guessing around 90-100 mph is a good guess.

Rule #1 When going off track, never touch the front brake, only use the rear brake.
Rule #2 Try not to go off track.
Rule #3 Never use the rear brake on track.

Thanks Lou. The note that comes out of that Moriwaki Race System is music to my ears. Poeple off track were commenting on the way it sounded as I circled the track. Next time I'll have someone stand on the pit wall and take some video of me passing them at speed.
Remember it was you that started me wanting a camera for the bike with your tail camera action recorded 09/26/07.

Great Videos Corey.
Too bad I missed you at Shannoville.
Maybe if your up this way again I'll get to meet the legend.
You did meet with my buddy Doug I heard. Good guy.

There was an '85 GPz550 for sale in Hamilton last week for $650 I so wanted to buy.
One day I'll get myself a GPz of some sort...

Thanks, but I'm no legend. Just a GPz550 Nut that really likes the bike. Lucky to have married a woman that doesn't want me to get rid of the ones I have, but has put the "Kabosh" on having any more. I'm OK with that.

I did meet Doug Galloway, and heard he had a spill on his '86 GPz550, and is slowly recovering.

Wish you could have made it out out to Shannonville. I met so many people, and what a great organization VRRA is to race with.

Buy a GPz550, you'll have a blast with it, and there's great support over at GPz550.com www.nwsca.com/scripts/gpz_forum_2005/default.asp
