I am hoping that someone has run into this problem and figured it out.

My ignition lost its mind last week on my 76 kz 900. When I turned the key to the off position the bike wouldn't shut off.I hit the kill switch, which shut off the engine but the headlight wouldn't shut off. I tried the headlight switch, but that wouldn't shut it off. I then disconnected the battery terminal which finally shut it all down. I checked wiring, fuses etc. and figured it was the ignition (original 33 year old part).So I ordered a new one from Rice Paddy (a real quick delivery too!) installed it and I still have the same problem.

So I'm stuck....any suggestions?

Sounds like a short. Try unplugging the ignition switch and reconnecting the battery to see if the problem persists. If it does, you will need to troubleshoot the wiring. Nice bike! Ed

Well Ed, you were right. After an afternoon in the garage I found the short. It was in the wiring harness up near the headlight. So I redid it and now I'm back on the road. Funny too,I had just passed 36k on the old girl and was thinking how reliable it was after 33 years (I've had it for about 3 years, bought from the original owner) I guess the Gods threw me a test to see if I really wanted to keep her running. Put 50 miles on it this morning and it ran just fine.
