I have a connection for a 78 KZ 650 without a title for $200 should I go for it or pass on it. It has a chrome Kerker and is missing the left sidecover which I have. The bike runs but the starter is messed up and kick only. What would you do?

Run the VIN # with the cop's and make sure it won't burn your hands. Then if you want title to it find out your states process, probably not that expensive but time consuming. You would most likely have 6 months to wait. Or you could do the other and put it on a track or even part it.

Yeah, check the vin #. If not stolen go for it. I've bought many bikes without a title and always got them titled.

How hard was it to title the bikes?

Then again, with a chrome kerker you can make up your 200.00 real fast. Check the vin if they'll let you, some states are real careful about not letting anyone know whats going on with a vehicle. Even a non-registered would still be worth it.

The title services want a bill of sale. The guy that has it only knows the titled owners first name which is not much help for getting a bill of sale to use with a title service. He can get a mechanics lien for about $300, to do a mechanics lien in Florida it must have been at the shop for 6 months or more which it has. The guy selling it got it as part of a package deal that involved a Z1 and two other bikes. I have a 77 650 with a title problem from another state that I can't get around, and that bike is sentimental to me because I got it from my brother who died 6 months after I got it. I was thinking this would be easier to title because it was titled in my state to begin with. The title service fees are from $165 to $200, the mechanics lien is $300. I guess for $500 I still would not be doing that bad. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions. Someone tell me to do it so I will quit thinking if I should or not.

This is the one I want on the road. It sure would be nice with a Kerker.

Buy the bike, keep the kerker, part the rest you don't need. Find a frame on Ebay that is titled, buy it with the money from parting the bike and the 500 your saving. If there is no issue with the bikes title other than getting it (e.g. the bike is not stolen) then I would part it. If its stolen I wouldn't touch it.

Also, 750 frames should fit the engine and possibly more.

I have titled 3 motorcycles in my home state of North Dakota. The law here is if there is no in-state record of it being titled and it is reported not stolen they will issue a title without a bill of sale. If it was previously registered in North Dakota you need to have the previous owner release the title. So for me it was a good thing they were out of state to begin with otherwise it would have gotten messy.

Ask your local DMV what theier process is, only takes a minute to call them. Even then there are some ways around the vin/title issue. Call an unscrupulous auctioneer and they can give you a BS bill of sale and a salvage/auction title. Used car salesman do that on a daily basis.

Bottom lien as long as it in NOT stolen you are fine, but don't even think about buying it if there is any possibility it is "hot".

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.
