New York
Take ALL of these things down to the DMV, wait in line and hand them all over.
Original Bill of Sale (needs to include price, year/make/model, odometer reading and VIN number and the names and signatures of the buyer and the seller.)
Completed FORM DTF-802 (Statement of Transaction) - www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/dtf802_01.pdf
Completed FORM MV-51B (Statement of Ownership) - www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv51b.pdf
Completed FORM MV-82 (Vehicle Registration/Title Application) - www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv82.pdf
Verification of the VIN # (tracing/rubbing/clear photograph of VIN or signed statement from a police officer)
Proof of name and date of birth (NYS Driver's license or "six points of identification" found at the bottom of www.nysdmv.com/idlicense.htm )
Proof of insurance (original insurance card)
You walk out with a NON-TRANSFERRABLE registration and the TRANSFERRABLE one comes from Albany in 4-6 weeks. Also- it only cost someone $63.00 (and that included the tax they had to pay on the vehicle purchase price!).
If you want historical or vintage (scooter must be 25 years or older) license plates, you must mail or visit the Albany DMV directly. The local DMV office will not be able to handle this - www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv440H.pdf .
someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

Kansas is a stickler for VIN authentication. They gave my pickup an exam worthy of a drug bust when I moved back from Oklahoma after moving the same truck from KS to OK five years earlier. Oklahoma didn't give a whit about it.

I will just go threw an outside title service and let them do the leg work.
Hey Otaker, I found out that in Il. you can fill out a form, have the bike appraised by a dealer and put up a cash bond equal to 1 1/2 times the appraised value, then get a title. If the former owner steps up he gets the money. If not you get it back after a certain length of time. (2 years I think)
Just researched this for a parts bike. Ended yup parting it out instead of tying my money up.

we don't have to deal with any of that bullshit up here i can walk in with a hand written bill of sale (infact i've filled them out in the truck before i walked in to the registry joint)all we have to do is provide proof of insurance and bingo bango out the door we go with a perfectly legal motorcycle. they only do a quick check to see if that number comes up stolen and away we go. and the vehicle is legally mine no problem no questions asked they don't care.
Yupp, and I have to say that sask is at least twice as easy as alberta. In alberta you have to have any vehicle more than 15 years old inspected to register it and I believe have it inspected at regular intervals after that. Sask you only have to have it done if it's out of province and then only the one time
Also, the bike inspection in sask is a joke, you take it to the inspection place, they look at and write down the numbers, you take the sheet to the registries. In alberta you have to take your bike to a mechanic and pay for a 130 point inspection to be done then go get the license plate (if everything passes) before you can ride the thing :S
And no titles is a bonus :woohoo:

Does anyone know if it is the same in Oklahoma? I traded a truck for my 750 ltd and the guy cant find the title. Don't know if it was ever in his name. I know it's not stolen due to having friends in Law Enforcement (being an ex cop). I would realy like to know if it would work for me!
NUB118,
If you can get the previous owner to file for a lost title it will take 3-4 days to get a title mailed to him. Do this at a tag agency. I had to do this last month for the numnutz who bought my van a year ago and then lost the title. It costs $12 in OK to file for a lost one. However...one girl at the tag agency said all the buyer needed was a notarized Bill of Sale. Call the tag agency and ask them to be sure.
If the above is not an option, then you go through the Title 42 process. This was developed to let tow companies and mechanic shops obtain a title for vehicles. It takes 4-6 weeks but you get the title in the end. Check Craigslist in OKC for a few people who advertise this service, costs from $75 to $125. You can do it yourself for a fraction of course. Search Google for Oklahoma Title 42. A state website has a packet in .pdf format you download, and takes you through the process.
Good Luck
