GPZ 750 Engine, Whats reasonable? was created by KawiConvert
Looking at a GPZ 750 engine from a 1984 and trying to figure out what a reasonable price is for it. The engine in question is complete with less than 10K miles on it and includes a mostly complete set of carbs. Anyways, haven't seen it yet, but trying to figure out what it is worth. Also, it is supposed to be in running condition, but again, haven't seen it yet.

Thanks,
KC

i guess if you got the guy on the phone and you can hear dueling banjos in the background.....it might run/it might not even be a real add....but if he tells you he'll take you behind the barn to show you the motor .....well...well dont go...........pass on that one......is this our old buddy north of me....no i know it's not....by the way i'm tempted to call him every time i see the new adds he runs and unload on him...a-hole..imo

Nah, Recycle yard up north of you. They are asking a bit under 300. But the motor is low miles, complete, and the carbs are missing a slide or two. I have some BS34's I got cheap on ebay on their way here along with other wiring, cooler, etc. I picked those up for the nutjob engine, but figure they'll come in handy now either way.

Anyways, as for the nut job with 12 fingers and toes I'm tempted to see when the add pops up. Then it disappears for a few days, and starts up again. Either he is skitzo or his computer is.

I just wanted to get an opinion as I don't really know what would be an ok, good, or great deal on one of these engines (the 87-92 hp variants).

Another way to put this would be is 400.00 too much for a 25hp boost for my bike?

try to build an extra 25 horsepower the old fasioned way it can cost you some major cash 400.00 that is very cheap for 25 ponies id jump over that in a second up here the standard price for an older engine that is a runner with out carbs or any extra's is usally a dollar a cc. to gain an extra 40 horsepower with my drag bike it has cost me close to 8000.00 so everything is relitive.

That sounds about right price wise for shops/yards back east. Most quoted between 500-1000. Though one here in Cali, granted its the OC area, quoted a solid 1K as well for motor no electronics.

I've been looking for a parts bike in my local area, but no luck so far. The seller Craig referred to seemed about as unstable as you can get with several generations of selective (in)-breeding.

Just trying to decide if its a good enough deal or to hold and wait for a better deal. I haven't been around the KZ/GPZ market as long as some others here so for me it is not cheap, but not out of the park either. Then again, what do I know?

it is so hard cuase on one day it is a great deal for any reasonable price 2-600 depending on condition.......but the universe has such a great sense of humor that...once i plop down the cash on somthing.....another even better deal pops up ten feet away......i guess i just ask myself "what happens if i'm stuck with a mistake".....i guess as long as i'm gonna play the old bike hobby thing ,,,,i'm gonna make sum mistakes,,,oh well......if you love "the bike you own now" then tossing some money at it is cool and you'll just spend a little more time making the swap..cool...my 2 cents

those engines aren't going to come along every day and for the money even if it's just a parts engine block, cams, head, well worth grabbing the fact it is suposed to be low milage runner is just gravy buddy jump all over it even if you dont use it your self you could definitly recoup your expenses just in parts sales.

Ok, went ahead with the deposit. Now to figure out my time so I can make it up there and pick it up. Trying to decide on the long route through the mountains, or the shorter route through traffic. Hmmm....

Yeah, its up about an hour north of Sacramento. It looks like a smaller dismantling yard. All of this is contingent on compression, condition, and whatever else I can determine without tearing it all apart. Otherwise I might see if bob-the-confused has an engine still for sale again.

The next best offer I had was 400 for a motor only from an 82 gpz750 down in LA. Figured this would be more likely to be clean and less chance of someone saying "bring out the gimp" during the engine inspection process.
