This picture was taken at Santa Pod in the UK. Way back in early 1979. My hair was just a little longer than today...
That bike was a composite of 2 bikes. My original Z1 was crash damaged by a friend. I was working on his Suzuki GT550 at his house. He borrowed my bike to go get some parts, and came back with far too many parts...
I was fortunate to find a complete rolling chassis from a racer who'd used the engine for a sidecar outfit. So the engine was a Z1A engine in a Z1B frame.
The tail and rear light was from a kz900, the headlight brackets from a GS1000. The engine was 1015cc 10.5:1 compression 0.410" cams, 29mm smoothbore carbs and a 4-1 pipe. The bike ran a best of 11.3 at120mph through the 1/4 mile, and was used as everyday transport. When I sold it in 1980, the engine had 50,000 very hard miles on it. Over 30,000 of those miles with the big-bore kit.
In 1979 I had 3 wins and 5 second places in heads-up drag racing at Santa Pod a couple of other places.
