Last year I purchased a neglected 1983 KZ1100 LTD that I found on E-bay. I wanted a project bike to restore and it was the perfect choice. The seller informed me that he didn't have any paperwork but in his state (CT), bikes that are over 25 years old only require a bill of sale for registration. Foolishly, I didn't do any homework or investigating and agreed to purchase the bike as is. After putting a lot of work into the bike over the winter, I discovered that I would not be able to register the bike in my state (NY) and I further discovered that CT requires more than just a bill of sale for registration. Unfortunately, the seller of the bike doesn't remember the name of the person that sold him the bike.

Can anybody help me with my dilemma? Is there a way to get a title if I don't have the name of the last person to have it titled? Is there any way of tracking down the previous owners? Is there any way to register this bike? I really don't want to part the bike out unless there is no hope of getting it on the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Demian

You can always buy a frame or parts bike with a title. Or look into a lien sale. I don't know NY laws, but Cali has some ways of getting it, most are painful in one way or another.

why can't you go to the dmv and give them the serial number on the frame and they should be able to tell who last registered the bike.in alberta it's very easy all you need is a hand writen bill of sale.

I've found this only works in some states. I tried it with a dirtbike and without the title in hand, Arkansas would not tell me anything about the bike or owners. Idaho on the other hand gave me name and address.

i have never understood this whole title thing if the bike has been registered before and it is not flagged as stolen why would it matter as long as you have a proper bill of sale for it. i bought a new truck in 2006 and did not recieve any type of title for it i recieved a bill of sale from the dealership and went down and got my registration and insurance in about 5 minuetes. what happens if you go and by a bike that has changed hands a few times without being plated and then you want to get it on the road after you have rebuilt it ten years later what can you do.

I don't know if this works in other statesbut in Texas if you let the DMV or State police (same people different names) Check kthe serial numbers out to make sure it is not stolen or wanted as evidence for any crimes you can file for a salvage title. This works with junk yard cars so it should be the same for bikes. You could check with your states DMV or State police and ask if they have a way to get a salvage title.
