- Blue handles better
I learned early on that my 650s want full choke and won't do squat if I don't start there.

Whenever he brought the bike out, watching him start it was a spectator sport! First he would place it on the kick stand, open the pet-cock, and tickle the carb. Then he would pull the valve lifter and turn the engine over until it was on the compression stroke, and the kick-start was approximately horizontal. With it setup like this he would then leap into the air and come down on the kick start - the bike would go ker-thump - and either continue running, or not. If it did not keep running, he had to sit down on the curb for 10 minutes to summon up enough energy to try again!
In the spirit of the era, we nicknamed him "Grease Nipple"! (Nice bike though - you could hear it miles away!)

Wow! You must be pretty bored to actually count those kicks. He stopped after the 33rd kick and took a look around. Then he stopped again on the 69th kick and it fired on the 73rd kick!

Something like "counting wallflowers on the wall that don't bother me all....' Well don't blame me. I've got nothin better to do.

ya, when i had my 72 sporty, it kicked back once and damn near threw me over the bars, i litteraly had to stand on the seat to get leverage in order to kick it over.
Oh yeah baby! When kick starting a Harley, you don't just straddle the bike and unfold your leg. You park that bike on the kickstand, use the kicker to get it just past TDC, then jump up in the air and come down with your full body weight on that G-D kicker. The leg MUST rule, otherwise you will break some body part. Especially on a Sporty with its rinky-dink linkage, hence the term Sportster knee.
You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever!
