Tim, I totally understand wanting to limit freeway riding but unfortunatly any good rides down here will reqire some freeway to get there. From Corona to Idilwyle (yea, bad spelling) will give a good ride but reqires about 40+ miles freeway east to Banning to start ride. Ortega reqires about 30 miles south and then not a real big ride. Palomar Mountain is a great ride but requires about 50+ miles and then there is Julian which requires about the same to start ride. What do you and everyone else think? I agree with the freeway thing but just no real way around it. You can get a better idea from this Google Earth map.

I don't mind the Freeways at all so where ever we ride is good. We can take a vote at breakfast.

I wasn't on the original Julian ride but suggest we maybe take the same route? We can shoot down to the Ortega and be there in the am when all the other bikes will be there. Heading east on the 78 is a nice ride all the way to Julian. Nice ride coming back on the 76 also. If time permits we can also shoot up to Palomar Mountain (off the 76) which consists many 1st/2nd gear hairpin curves.

I feel for ya...... we're having a rough time here too with "winter" temps hitting almost 90. Really screws up our riding season! :woohoo:

I'm looking at the local news, and there's lots of fires burning in Sylmar, Corona, and Yorba Linda. Freeways close, then open, then close again.
I'm going to have to cancel. I'm starting to worry that I might not be able to get home on Sunday afternoon.
Right now, the 5/14/210 junction is a mess, and I'm not sure it's going to be better by tomorrow.
I called Grant, and he's also decided to sit this one out.

Hey All! This is Mrs. Blue Meanie, writing for my hubby. Time he got your message said to tell you he couldn't answer cause he was driving and you know the new law. John suggested that maybe with all the freeway closures that perhaps you guys should reconsider the ride for tomorrow and schedule it for another time. These fires are wreaking havoc, and he says a lot of you have to use the freeways that are shut down. Plus 2 of the guys are for sure not going. He'll be home by 8 pm tonight, so feel free to leave replies.

Thanks!
Mrs. Blue Meanie :)

I'm a no-show for tomorrow as well.

After talking earlier with you Tim, Rudy (wagonmaster) gave me a call and apparently he wasn't totally aware how of far / fast the fires in Orange County have travelled.
He's going to pass on the ride too.

The current news shows the fire originally started last night in Corona near the 15 / 91 freeway interchange. The strong winds have blown baseball-sized embers into several other cities (Yorba Linda, Brea, Anaheim / Anaheim Hills, La Habra, Chino Hills, etc.) causing it to spread at a breakneck pace!

The last report is that the following freeways have been closed / partially closed:
91 freeway in both directions from the 15 freeway west to roughly about the 57 freeway
57 freeway in Brea and Anaheim
71 freeway (AKA the Corona Expressway) at the 91 freeway
60 freeway near Brea.

Honestly, it looks like we'd end up spending more time trying to find an unobstructed / open route just to be able to meet up for breakfast. Sadly, we'd all likely be worn out before even heading out for the ride itself.

I think it'd be best if we all pass on tomorrows ride and see if we can try to re-schedule it for another day?

I just spoke with JoeK, and he said he was probably going to pass on the ride tomorrow due to the fires.
I couldn't get a hold of sweetback because apparently he's changed his number, but I'll shoot him an email to let him know whats up.

Man, this really sucks!
Thankfully I haven't heard of anyone losing their lives in the fires, but I feel horrible about the 1000+ people who've lost their homes and all of their belongings. :(
