Alrighty, so as far as i know this forum doesn't have a voting system which makes me sad but that's beside the point...

i just got solid works 2007 with the intention of modeling the kz900/1000 engine for folks who can also get there hands on the software. This will help in making custom accurate drawings of frames for the engine. I know alot of folks dont have the 400+ bucks to be forking over for the software but i just want feedback on whether or not i should do this and if any one would care to have it put up for downloading on the site. Oh and before i forget solid works and autocad work hand in hand so it still can be a useful tool for you. thanks in advance

Hi Makarth,

I've heard lots of good stuff about solid works and would like to hear about your experiences with it as well. As for putting it up on KZR for download, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't go over very well as it's agin the rewules.

Every time I see that sketch in your sig I'm reminded of this old pic.

Seem similar?

I presume that you'd be putting the drawings that you create into the file area. No problem with that as several other programs should be able to read them.

What types of files does it export in? I been messing with Lightwave and Vue for 3d modeling and rendering. Importing DXF, LWO and a bunch of other formats.

Our mechanical engineer at my place of business uses Solid works, very cool indeed. Of course, he knows the ins and outs of it and makes extremely accurate drawings (3D) based on our requirements for our system hardware.

He also uses this same software for my electronic board design & layouts in my prototypes. Very handy when trying to figure out how to install all this crapola in a little ass metal enclosure...

I use AutoCad and MicroStation... All in all, I'd use it for sure where I have the luxury of handing the SW file over to my co-worker for opening. Now, am I going to spend $400 for this application or would I if I didn't have the co-worker option, hell no...

Same time, any drawings/calculations/measurements you provide can easily be plotted out in image or pdf file formats for others to download.

Regarding "whether or not i should do this "... your call on your needs and if it's worth it to you for other projects or side business.

Short Answer:Yes:)
Long Answer:
I am 3D Sculptor/Texture artist in the entertainment industry. I mostly use 3DS Max which can usually import anything Autocad can.
I have been thinking that if ever finish my project and have both bikes running well. I would like to re-create my KZ in 3D. I have a spare engine I need to split. So I will have a real reference.
I would love to create an animation of
1)The engine assembling itself.
2)Engine running inside transparrent cases.
3)Slowly revealing chasis B)
It would be purely for fun and would probably take the rest of my life to complete but it would be cool. It may be a pipe dream now for me but any 3D assets we could share would save a lot of time.

i didn't think i would get this much response. i'll more then likely do the drawing then. the biggest hardship i'm going to have is being extremely accurate with the dimensions. Oh btw the sketch isn't by me, it's from a manga called Great Teacher Onizuka that i used to read when i was younger. I was and still am a big manga/anime fan and it's probably the biggest reason i own a kz1000. can't make fun of me though because smokie and the bandit was probably the biggest reason camaro sales went up the same year. same can be said with dirt harry and the revolver he carried. so HAH! as for recommending solid works.... i've played with it for 10 minutes and if it works like i'm anticipating, it's going to be like autocad with whimsical colors and a better tutorial. By the way i didn't buy it, i have a habit of asking for things from my professors to the point they give me stuff.

edit: the list of export file types is too long to list. i know maya can read solid works so i'm sure your software can too.

I've used Solidworks since 2005 at school on the Formula SAE team and I have to say, of all of them, even 2008, 2007 was the easiest, most efficient solidmodeling program I've used. I've also used Unigraphics NX5, but Solidworks 2007 is top notch. Solidworks can import/export to many common solidmodel files such as DXF and Parasolid which are recognized by many CAD systems. Also, Solidworks and AutoCAD go hand in hand and can transfer files to each other pretty easily. I'd give SW 2007 5 stars!

I want to model the KZ650 frame in solidworks so I can model my monoshock setup before fabrication. I've got some cool ideas...
