a group of 14 Harleys all came in together and parked together in this corner of the parking lot. Surprisingly, they all started right up after the group returned to their bikes.

If you come from a motorcycle family, you're still not home free. They will encourage you to ride but they may give you bad advice or worse yet, try to teach you to ride. Don't ever let a loved one teach you to ride. Worst of all is learning totally on your own.
Take my advice. Level the odds by learning all you can about the proper way to ride a motorcycle. Let the MSF teach you. Then get an experienced trusted friend who is also MSF trained to go out with you as you practice.
I guess I'll just hang my keys up now... 37 years later! :laugh:
Remember that if you find yourself in a rear wheel skid, DO NOT release the brake pedal. Ride it out. Releasing the pedal will often cause a high side incident.
:huh: I always find this statement interesting, it assumes your in a turn or have slid the bike around. I've never even come close to highsiding by letting off the rear brake if it locked up when in a straight line. Better to stop the skid when you first hear it IMHO. If I had continued to hold it and it slid out then I'd continue probably but I know for a fact that that isn't a guarantee of no highside, the tire will still hookup with the pavement sooner or later, hopefully later.

Me too - after 40 years! However, I do agree that starting on a smaller, less powerful bike is good advice, and it is enforced in many countries.
I cut my teeth on a Vespa 150! Then graduated to a Triumph 500. I will say, it is a skill you don't seem to lose with age, but then again, I know I don't pull some of the stupid stunts I did as a teenager - but I lived to tell the tale!
