a local bike shop is redoing a kz that has been touched by the recent flooding. the water went all the way to the gauges. ive never really experienced any of the shops work since i do all the work on my own bikes. what should i be wary when it comes time for them to put the bike up for sale? i was thinking about how the water went all the way up the exhaust, probably got in the gas tank, could it enter the brake lines and mc? im wondering if i should just let this one slip by. he was talking about selling it for 2k after he was finished with it. a 78 1000 ltd. only 8000 miles on it. and kz's seem to be going for so much nowadays. good buy? bad buy?

Well, without seeing the bike and truely knowing what is being done to it, I know that I can get a fairly nice 1977/8 KZ1000 for US$2000 that hasn't been under water Why take the chance?

The problem with machines (including motorcycles) that have been in floods is mud.
It gets into everything, there will be mud in the cylinders, mud in the ports on the head, mud in the crankcase, mud in the crank bearings, mud in everything.

The whole bike, including the motor, will have to be totally disassembled, cleaned, then reassembled.

And he would lose money selling it at $2k by doing all that work, so he's not going to do it.

I wouldn't touch it.

Plus one on what Steell said. Another thing to consider is that if an insurance company had to pay off on it it will likely have a salvage title which will continue to be a big red flag to any potential future buyer. It's a shame that such a low mileage bike was ruined but unless I could pick it up as a parts bike for maybe a couple hun I'd have to say pass 2K is way too much money given the history.
