Is My Bike Canadian or American?
04 Jul 2008 18:11 - 04 Jul 2008 18:11
I live in Canada and have a 1978 KZ650 D1 but the speedo is in MPH. I'm a bit foggy on when we converted to metric and when vehicles made the transition over to kilometers. A buddy of mine has a '78 Yamaha RD400 and his reads kilometers so this got me wondering if my bike is actually Canadian or came here from the states.
Anyone know when Canadian KZ's made the transition?

Both my '78 KZ650 and my brother's '79 KZ650 came in kms only.
What is your VIN# ? If the numerical part begins in a five (5), you have a US built 650.
Just noticed last night my buddies Honda GL1000 1978 has Miles in larger numbers and KMS in small #s.

I know the tank has been swapped since its not the typical SR tank, so maybe other parts have been changed.
Thanks for the responses guys.

I wouldn't be suprised, the only place that had readily available Km gauges for the Z1 was kawasaki for a few hundred (I thought km speedo was necessary to pass inspection, thank goodness it's not  )If so, I'm now wondering if the PO had to change the guages and bought American ones.

Ask your bike a question...
If it answers with "Aye" or if it runs on Moose Head Beer...
then it is Canadian...
If it answers with "Go screw yourself" or if it has a bunch of dents and duct tape....then it's American.
Sorry, couldn't resist...

I have a Canadian 1977 KZ650-B1... kph and rpm.
Fun Facts:
The use of the metric system for all purposes has been legal in Canada since 1873.
In January 1970 the government announced in a "white paper" that Canada would go metric.
In 1971 the government appointed Metric Commission Canada with the mandate of planning and managing the conversion to metric.
The target was conversion by 1980.
During the Labour Day weekend in 1977 every speed limit sign in the country was changed from mph to km/h.
From the same time, every new car sold in Canada had to have a speedometer that showed speed in km/h and distance in km.
Gasoline pumps changed from imperial gallons to litres in 1979.
When my generation dies off, the conversion will be complete...
Long live mpg.

Thanks guys for all your help. From all of your responses it looks like it's a Canadian bike with probably some American gauges. Like I said before, I don't mind this but now I don't know how much milage (or is that kilometerage
) is on the engine. No big deal really, runs great now so I'll just ride it until it stops
Thanks again for all your help.

I don't know how you can really tell what country it originated in actually. I think all SRs were made in Japan. I don't think any had the 5xxxxx serial number but could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Even if it had a 5xxxxx serial number being USA built, it could still have easily bean built for the Canadian market.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
