Helmet re-upholster possible? was created by DanAir
I have an old, high quality, full face helmet by Simpson. The exterior is perfect but the interior is worn out except for the Styrofoam. Since a comparable replacement helmet is $600 plus, I thought it could be re-upholstered.

Anyone have knowledge or experience with this?

Can it be done? By whom? Cost?

Thanks in advance,

How old is old? If it's more than 10 years, junk it. If it's more than 5 but less than 10...ehhh? Do you think your head is worth redoing it or would you have more peace of mind (no pun intended) with a new helmet? Also what rating does it have: SA, M or K?

This Simpson Kevlar Snell helmet was the most expensive helmet in a shop with hundreds of various helmets including Bell. That was 1981. I like the helmet and think I will just re-do the interior and ride without one during the process, just because I can.

I would no more junk my 27 year old helmet than junk my 27 year old bike.

Your choice, of course. Personally, I wouldn't do that for the simple reason that oxygen and ultraviolet rays are said to have a detrimental effect on the materials used in helmets over time. Would you ride on 27 year old tires? I hope not, and for the same reasons that you wouldn't, you shouldn't trust an antique helmet to protect your noggin.

With the current interest in vintage motorcycles, there are some period styled helmets out that that look close to 27 years old, but are up to current standards. I like riding on my old bikes, but I like the new riding gear on me.

Check with the manufacturer. Bell used to sell kits for their helmets I haven't bought in a few years though. Fullmer folks don't even stock small plastic parts that are prone to breakage.

Is it not the rule-of-thumb that a helmet more than four years old, cannot be considered reliable in the event of an accident?
