Need a little info on a 1983 KZ1000 was created by fuzzwardo
I may be able to pick a 1983 kz 1000 up for a good price but would like a little info on it first.
Is this a shaft or a chain drive? Would this have the J motor in it? Is there anything else I should know about it?

I was told by a 3rd party that it has either a charging problem or some other electrical problem. Is there a common problem like this for these bikes?

It would be chain drive for sure as only the KZ1000E in 1979-80 was shaft, all other model KZ1000s were chain. If it's a 1983 only KZ1000J or the police model was made in a KZ1000. A 1983 KZ1000J is not very common. If it's actually a 1982 model, you could get the CSR or LTD also I believe. All would be considered the J engine. Stators have been known to burn up in these, could be that, but hard to say.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Stator is the only down side in electrics that I know of. It´s about $150 and a gasket and really easy to change. Otherwise great bikes and lots of spare parts available.

I should add the Eddie Lawson replica was also an offering in 1983 in the 1000s so there were 3 models. Maybe this one is a ELR and the guy doesn't know :) Reminds my of a story, a guy I knew a long time ago claimed he went to look at an add in the paper for 2 "1953 Chevys" and found they were actually Corvettes, but the owner didn't know they were anything special. Now that is stupid and I'm sure the guy was completely full of crap, but we can always hope and pray.

I wish that was the case with the ELR but the guy I talked to said he had one of those he bought brand new also so it could be a line of crap. Hopefully I'll find out about it this weekend.
