Legal Parking Question was created by Duggie7mag
Hello, all. I just have a quick question about parking regulations. In parking lots, at the end of the parking row for cars, there is often the striped area close to the store/building. I often see other bikes parked in that area and am just wondering if that is legal, an accepted practice, or just the way we do things while we are living free.

Anyone know where the rules can be found about parking regulations?

I'm in Ohio, but haven't been able to find anything for any state on this subject.

Thanks
Duggie

I'm not a lawyer, but where I live parking lots are not considered public roads. They are private property so are not subject to municipal parking laws. The only thing I've ever seen inforced are handicapped parking restrictions. Bear in mind I do live in Vermont.... B)

PS: I park in those area's frequently and have never been bothered.

Unless it's marked otherwise, I don't think you would have a problem. On the other hand, I use a parking spot.
My reasoning is this:

1. Motorcyclists already are looked down on by many cagers, and I know I get irritated when some squid cuts me off in a parking lot so he can squeeze into that little triangle and park closer than even the teenagers who always use the handicapped spots. So I try to consider our reputation and other's feelings.B)

2. That's a really small parking space, even for a bike, and if you think about it, inside the store, when someone knocks something off the shelf, it's usually on the end of the isle.

3. If I'm at the store on a bike, it's because I wanted to get out of the house for some relaxation and fresh air. Who wants to ruin that over some stupid parking etiquitte? I'd rather enjoy my short walk and enjoy my time in the store knowing I probably won't find my bike squashed or some irate old fart giving me the finger when I come out.

Thanks for the responses guys. I usually park in a parking spot, just because I don't want to seem lazy...and face it, after riding a while, a little walking is good for the old butt anyway. Sometimes I do feel a little guilty taking up a whole parking space when there is a full lot and cars are driving around looking for places to park.

I may just quit worrying about what folks are thinking and handle my business.;)
