My KZ 550 ltd was stolen recently and the moron who stole it ended up smashing into a car, cartwheeling over it, and hitting a tree. TOTALED. The prosecutor has asked me to total up my losses but i need some ads showing what these babies can go for (because the bluebook value makes me cringe). It was a 1981 and it ran beautifully... a really quick bike. New tires, sprockets, chain. No dents. 25k miles. No rust. Good seat condition. Does anyone know how I should assign a value to it? Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to make the thief pay as possible.

I think some of us should create craigslist advertisements for our bikes. The_Chapster can then print our ads and show them to his insurance agency so they know what our bikes are worth in the free market and what would be needed for them to replace the bike with one of comparable value.

I paid $1325 and put another $500 in rubber, wiring, and cables into my 1982 kz550 ltd. I would not feel ashamed to post it for sale at $1800. Whether or not the general public thinks that too much is their problem.

In my experience, the prosecutor isn't like an insurance adjuster -- they don't want / need a bunch of ads or even Kelly Blue Book paperwork on your bike, they just want a number from you. To keep it reasonable yet fair, I'd just take Blue Book and then add the actual cost of all the mods you did. Consider adding in the labor you put into it as well. Worse thing that can happen is the prosectuor / defense attorney / judge says, "That's too much, I'll just give the Blue Book cost." But it's unlikely to happen -- most of the time, what the victim wants, the victim gets (so long as not crazy). My $.02. Good luck, and sorry to hear about your loss! The bottom line is that the bike is irreplaceable to you - I understand, brother.

p.s. keep in mind -- it's not like you get a check when he gets sentenced. He'll be paying something like $50 a month, which will go to court costs, etc., and a portion to you. People who commit this kind of stupid crime usually don't have much dough (b/c they're idiots)

Sorry to hear about your loss chapster, and I hope you get a suitable settlement to have you back on an equivalent KZ550 quickly. How did he steal it - I know mine takes a little coaxing this time of year after sitting in the garage for a few months, and I know to set the petcock to prime?
