Well, I'm not presenting any of this as facts because the science seems to still be in its infancy. But a quick search on the internet (for watever that is worth)shows while a fuel cell produces more water per unit energy release than gasoline (just over 2 times as much), it can release the water as hot liquid or low-temp steam condensing readily. (One article even mentioned this could lead to water hazards on roads.) Gasoline releases its water as high-temp vapor. So how would this affect things? Especially in conjunction with the fact that there is theoretically zero CO and CO2 (which is where the gasoline combustion releases a large amount of its oxygen atoms instead of as water)?

This is one of the articles.

It makes the calculation assuming gasoline to be pure octane.

This article claims to be from the U.S. Dept. of Energy and makes the claim that a fuel cell produces less water vapor than burning gasoline (producing the same power).

I'm not really defending a position here, because I haven't decided on any position yet. Just adding $.02

Cat converters use platinum in the reaction, so what happens when we run out of that?? Any muffler shop you go to will have a pile of them out back. They sell them to recyclers.

Thnak you, ronjones, for injecting some facts and a lot of sanity into what has become an "insane" debate.
You are bang-on with your asessments. Further, YOUR projections are as valid as ANY expert's are.....after all, NO ONE can predict the future....even so-called "experts". If they COULD predict the future, they'd be playing the stock market and living in mansions in Hawaii....right ?? Instead their "guesses" are widely reported as gospel in the media and people run around saying the sky is falling, etc etc.
The whole thing makes me want to throw up.
Again, ron, thanks for throwing the light of sanity on much of this debate.
