If not, then pull out your factory KZ650 service manual.
According to the Big K, here's a partial list of the items to be done, WITHOUT FAIL, every 500 miles or 800 kilometres:
Change oil
Check/adjust valve clearances
Adjust carbs
Check timing/adjust points
Clean fuel system
Front fork, inspect/clean
Adjust throttle cables
Spoke tightness & Rim runout
Drive chain, check/adjust
Apparently these 650's are quite fragile and need a LOT of attention.
On the upside, though, you only have to change the oil filter every SECOND oil change and the air filter element only needs to be cleaned every 5000 and 15,000 kilometres.
Heck, if you did ALL the maintenance as per the schedule you wouldn't have any time to ride the darn thing....so between wrenching and not being able to ride, the bike would last.....oh....say.....at least 100 years or so.:woohoo:
Who writes this stuff, anyway ???

Yes, I know, liability lawyers certainly had a hand in this stuff and I'm sure the EPA regs were responsible for a lot of it.....but it's just silly when you look at it.
And to think, Ducati owners have been complaining about the high costs of THEIR factory-mandated service requirements......
They should than their lucky stars they don't own a KZ650.

Guerenteed the S O B that wrote that never owned or even ridden a kz 650, because if the had they would have re-written that service manual. The kz 650 in my mind is one of the simplest bikes to keep running right, granted not as easy as the 2 banger kz 400. Just my .02 centsB)

These specs were written by uptight, over engineering, Japanese men... to them I am sure this all sounded quite reasonable!

My KZ900 and 1000 manual is the same way. Now let me see---- I have put 10,000 mi. on the bike this year and I did what?
Ajusted the drive chain 4 times, add a little oil every once in a while when it needs it, tighten the cam-chain every month or so, AND PUT LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF GAS IN IT, AND JUST PUT MY ASS ON IT.:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

If you think that's bad, you should look at the sticker (if it's still there) under the seat for pre ride inspection.
If I did all that every day, I would always be late for work.

Yep, Mario, my sticker is still in prime condition and, yes, you'd have to get up an hour earlier if you went through that series of checks every morning. It's the lawyers, I tell ya !!!

H2RICK,
Better get someone who hasn't been smokin' those funny cigarettes to read the manual to you. I don't know what FSM you're looking at, but I have 3 different ones (for 1976, 1979, & 1980) and none of them, including the First Issue published April 20, 1976 show the schedule you quote other than checking the drive chain. Here's the FMS schedule:

Oil change after FIRST 800km then every 3,000km

Check valve clearances, carbs, points, fuel system spokes, etc. after FIRST 800km then every 5,000km

You asked who writes this stuff, better to consider who reads this stuff.

As I read it, the 800 km interval is the break-in period. After that milestone it specifies a 5000 km interval, monthly, or yearly for most maintenance except the drive chain which is specified to be lubricated every 300 km and adjusted every 500 km, which is about right.

At least my manual doesn't seem to be overly cautious.
