sears roebuck motorcycle veglia borletti was created by cottoncandyninja
my dad dragged home this bike from his childhood home back in tennessee. the tach says veglia borletti but someone was telling me they just designed tachs and such and dont make bikes...

it doesnt have a vin but just some number coding stamped into the frame. he really wants to get it running but i cant see being able to restore it. especially since i dont know what it is. it doesnt even have a key. you just kick start it apparently and the tank just pops open with a touch. an allstate perhaps? let me know as this one would be cool to bring back.

if i cant get the original parts, cant i just retrofit it with newer parts? perhaps not?

a Puch or a Gilera would be my guess on the manufacturer, i would think that parts would be avalible, but pricy.

yep, we've got it narrowed down to a gilera 106ss. but it could still be something else... maybe. i doubt it though. does anyone know where i can get some parts at?

After a little research, I think it's a Montgomery Wards Benelli.

Here is a pic of one, but it may be a different model.

Here's your pic, look at the motor, it's almost identical.

steell i wish you hadnt done that. now youre making me doubt myself. i forget to flip the photo, because my camera on my computer mirrors the pics. thats why the exhaust comes out on the wrong side. the exhaust on my bike comes up after the foot peg and also the muffler has a similar shape but tapers more at the end.

i also found a pic of the gilera 106 which my dad thinks it is, and it seems to have the same handlebar as well.

its gotta be a gilera, this bikes muffler (which is also a 106) matches up to mine identically!!

Ok, but isn't the bike in your pics a four stroke? and aren't the Gilera's two stroke?

I still can't find a pic of a Gilera motor that matches yours, but I do see lot's of Benelli's that look like they use the same design.

Seats/handlebars/exhast are often replaced with parts off other bikes, but motors rarely are (at least on that kind of bike).

Post the numbers off the frame, that might help :)

Look at where the cylinder block meets the case, see that hump that is on both sides? That is a typical Benelli design.

The motor looks a lot like a Benelli, but I can't find any Benelli frames that match the one in your pics.

At this point all I can say is, it looks like it was made in the late 50's to early 60's :D

its a two stroke. the numbers are

model number : 808 89542
s/n : *106*4421*

the asterisk is actually a star on the frame between the serial numbers.

Found one reference to that number HERE

But he was trying to figure out what he has.

That number is close and in the same format as other numbers for Sears motorcycles listed at the same link.

Still looking though :)

eBay Link to a bike with the same 808 89542 number, and he's not sure what that one is either :D

Ok, you win, it sure appears to be a Sears/Gilera 106SS

Parts/repair manual on eBay LINK

And if you do a search of Yahoo Groups (I assume you know about them), I'll bet there is a group devoted to the Sears/Gilera motorcycles, and that would be the place to get info and parts (I'm a member of several Yahoo Groups for that reason).

This link should take you to the Yahoo Groups search page with a list of Sears/Gilera groups, there is even one devoted to the 106 :)
