Can't tell from the pic, but is that an aluminum "Rack-Factory" luggage rack with wood trim? :)

nope the rack is a rusty, cheapy job.
so, it has been a long day, and i thought i was beat on, my "getting running in a day" plan. the P.O was quite the handman, so one should have thrown away hiss tools a long time ago. going in overall it just looked like a bike that has been sitting outside for a long time. it was last registered in 92', so i have 15 years of dormancy to combat. fairly new battery so someone has been trying to get it going, and also brand new plugs....hummm....so some more pictures
so, what is under the tank?
well this chrome plated, JC whitney beauty that does not work, and the professional wiring job

well now we are starting to get somewhere. clean up some connections and the coil voltage improves, but is not up to snuff, but i will worry about that later, i want to here some killer B noise now! Off with the carbs, no pictures we all know what dirty carbs look like and these were no different, little scrubbing, little blowing and back together, put on some new fuel line, and a couple filters, check for leaks...none. so now i need some spark, dig through a box of my stuff reveals a kz400 coil that i know is good and in minutes she is on and i am rewarded with a tiny little orange spark...Good enough! lets start kicking! as we all know how piss poor a 750B electric starter is right? well 10 minutes later my foot is pretty sore and i break out the car battery direct to the starter, so by now you are all on the edge of your seat, WHAT HAPPENED! WHAT HAPPENED!! well....nothing, about six afterfires and a couple backfires.
busted...flat busted...i'm pooped...not angry, but i have justed been bested, vanquished if you will by the Killer B. oh well button her up, put the tools away, tomorrow is another day...
go inside to take a long hot shower, but my mind is still in the garage, what is wrong with this P.O.S. it has to go, one set of points, one coil...what could be wrong? but then i think of the coil install and i think, he couldn't, he wouldn't, he definetly shouldn't...but he did, all my problems, hopes and dreams were in here

So i finish my shower and dry in second and on with the shorts and slippers into the garage in a flash. did he do it? thats right the cam lobe is on backwards. off with the points and flip it around. points back on, no time to static time them, just screw them in the middle and stab that kicker, i am going to beat this beast yet, and before 7 pm to boot. Gas on, key on, kicker out, up i go, down i come, nothing...up i go, down i come, puttt..putt..poof, humm teasing me i see? up i go, 'give her a little throttle i think' down i coming... VROOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!!!!!! VROOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM............... putt..putt...putt...putt
hand off throttle idling, first time she has sat like that in a least 15 years, and i did it. time for some more white russians...
the Killer B abides...in my garage

Very strange! When we first got Abbies 78 KZ400, it acted like the timing was 180 degrees out. Sure enough, the same as your's, the points cam was 180 out. Only thing different than your's is how much time I needed to find out that it COULD go in there backwards..... We won't talk about that.

Anyway, congrats on the new toy. I'm starting to wonder if I want a 750 twin.

I wonder????? With the points cam reversed if you had put it in gear and push started it backwards would the engine run backwards? Then you would have had 5 speeds in reverse and instead of it burning gas and making exhause fumes, it might have sucked in exhaust fumes and made gasoline. (What a moneymaker!) This must have been what the previous owner had in mind when he reversed the points cam. :woohoo:
