Farmer Boys St. Judes Rally in So Cal was created by ltdrider
Grantl and I left Acton at 7:30 am on Sunday, and had a perfect ride to Riverside. Cool weather, bright sunshine, and almost no traffic. The 138 is now a four lane highway (thanks CalTrans!) much of the way to the 15 fwy.
We got to the Farmer Boys in Riverside at 9:00, and were given a hardy welcome by the Geezers MC Club members. A very friendly bunch, riding mostly cruisers and touring bikes.
Four KZ riders were mixed in with about 50 V-Twins -
RetroRiceRocketRider (a member of the Geezers Club), Z1Rick (also a member of the Geezers), Grantl, and myself.
The ride to Chino was about 30 miles, but I had 85 on my clock when we left, so I was getting nervous about fuel. But no worries, I got in without switching to Reserve.
Food, drinks, and a raffle in Chino, then on to Covina.
10 miles out of Covina, my throttle cable went "ping!"
Blaze had the good manners to wait till I was going downhill, so I coasted into a side street, followed by Grantl & R4.
Chris had the know-how, and Grant had the tools, and after about 40 minutes of street-side surgery, we'd swapped my good closing cable with my broken opening cable. We were in R4's neck of SoCal, so he led us to the Rally meeting point.
After some cold drinks and some conversation, Grantl and I were back on the road, headed for home.
Weather couldn't have been better, and we had a smooth ride all the way home.
This is a fun event, with good people, and a great cause - St. Judes Childrens Hospital. I hope you look for this next year, and plan to attend.

I had a great time. The Geezers are a really friendly group and are NOT brand snobs--their attitude comes across as--if you have a bike and enjoy riding--we accept you.
Riding in a large group (50 or so) is very strange. This group has escort riders that effectively block off intersections from opposing traffic until the column of riders in the group have passed. They might have several riders assigned to do this because they are always zipping past the column to get back to the front of the line. Not sure how legal this practice is, but its kinda cool if you're part of the column. The down side to riding in a large group is dealing with the hurry-up to catch up then grab the brakes to keep from rear-ending the bike in front. Some riders seem to be comfortable riding side-by-side, but I felt a little uneasy doing this.
The ride to the ride was fun. The sun was low so Tim and I were riding straight into a blinding light. One section of Hwy 138 is gently rolling whoop-de-doos. Most of this stretch of road is double yellow no pass zone. We were following a small group of cars when we came to a single white line section. I checked for no oncoming cars, dropped down a gear and let the string out. As I passed the last car I looked down at the speedo, pegged at 85mph, rpms looked about 6700 jumping to close to 7000 so I guess I might have been close to 100, guess I'll never know. The bike was tracking straight no wiggling from the front end, but I was expecting it to start feeling light.
Anyway, I had a fun day. Meeting new friends, seeing Tim, Rick, Chris, and getting to meet Rose was a blast. I look forward to their ride next year.
Grant.
