Book Recommendation
17 Sep 2007 06:04
Howdy,
Can anyone recommend a great book on how motorcycles work? I'm a computer guy and don't know crap about motorcycle engines, what a carb does, what a coil does, why electronic ignitions are better than what is on the bike stock...
So, I thought it would be a good idea to get a book that explained all of that stuff from basics through advanced topics. At least that way I can ask intelligent questions when I need help! LOL
Thanks!

Don't have a book, but if you're a computer geek like me, this might be better:
dansmc.com/MC_repaircourse.htm
He starts off with the basics, and gets just about as complicated as you want.

An excellent source of such information is the Kawasaki Motorcycle Service Manual for your model. The maintenance section provides a description of what each system does and how it works along with drawings and instructions on how to perform maintenance. What's especially nice is that it is specific to your model so you are seeing the same systems in the book that you can see and touch on your bike. I can't speak to the "aftermarket" books, but the ones written by Kawasaki are very good. Let us know if you need help finding yours. Ed

The factory manuals are invaluable. Kawasaki's manuals are quite good....and they got better as they went along.
Thanks to the other guys who posted links to those other sites. Quite interesting.

Yes, thanks for the extra links!
I actually do have the Kawasaki manual for my bike. I like it a LOT more than the Clyer manual but there are still gaps...I mean - grand canyon crevices - in my understanding  so the links ya'll shared will really help.
Thanks again!

Very good basic resource. I also have a Clymer manual I order off ebay. I also consult the parts diagram that is linked to Kaw.com. Sometimes just seeing the exploded view is all you need to figure out your issues.
