There are at least a couple more pics in the magazine. It's nice to see a representative of my first KZ in the pages of MC. :)

Interesting little article, I believe they are wrong about the carbs though. To my knowledge the SR's had the same 24 mm carbs as the other 650's. The only 22 mm carbs I'm aware of are the horrible TK's they used on the 550's.

My info says 24 mm carbs too. Maybe in certain areas? Calif? Europe? had 22 mms?

My factory service manual says 22mm for '78 and 24mm for '79.

This is one that has me scratching my head. I looked on the Kaw site to see if the 78 SR and the 78 C-2 used the same intake manifolds since I know the C-2's had 24 mm carbs. It shows that the SR uses 16065-046 and 16065-047 the C-2 uses 16065-048 and 16065-047. It shouldn't bug me like this but I don't remember ever hearing of a VM22 carb. Maybe WG can answer this when he returns.:S

Real quick I just pasted VM22 into a google search and several part places (Sudco, MikesXS as examples) sell parts for VM22s so maybe they're around?

This discussion has raised its head in the past. So far, I haven't done any measuring to confirm the spec. I'm only relaying what the FSM states. If there is a disagreement (as in the past), take it up with Kawasaki. ;)

I do think that regardless of the venturi size, the throat size going into the intake boots is the same so the boots are interchangeable. The boots for the '79 and later models have the outer ports (1 & 4) pointed up and inward for the vacuum lines leading to the air switch.

Nate I'm not disputing what your FSM says, and I'm sure it would be both possible and actually highly likely that Mikuni would use the same carb body and just bore the venturi smaller. It's just one more little useless piece of Kawasaki trivia I guess. Thats what's cool about this site you learn something new all the time. I always thought the 650's all came with 24's up until 82 when they went to the BS 32 CV carbs.

Mellvis' 78 SR came with stock 24's. It now has 29's with pods and a Kerker.

(probably due to a needed bit of tinkering with the carbs)

Sounds like the SR they used needed Ibbyized...

Fuel to the fire:
My FSM part #99924-1007-03 of Sept. 10, 1981 says...
1978 B2A and D1A both use VM22's....but strangely enough my C2 is not/not listed or shown anywhere in this manual. Apparently the C2 was not sold in the USA....or maybe it has its own manual ??
All 1979 and 1980 models are listed as having VM24's.

And, since the manual was printed in September of 1981, why the heck aren't the 1981 models shown in this mnaual ??? Or are the E/F models that are listed as 1980 models actually 1981 models ???
Why can't factories get this stuff right ?? It's NOT rocket science, after all.....;)
Or is this some oriental zen thing happening here ??
KZ650C2 Stock/mint. Goes by "Ace".
H2A Built from a genuine basket case. Yes,it's a hot rod.
GT550A Stock/mint. Pleasant stroker.
