I'm sure 3/77 would be a 1977 model. Other differences would be the 1977 model has a round shaped front master cylinder that the cap is threaded onto where the 78s had a more square shaped master cylinder with the cap held on with 2 philips screws. Also the front caliper is in front of the forks on a 77, behind on a 78. Here's what the stator cover looks like on a 77 like gringo was saying, 3 allen screws visible.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Well, looks like it's a 77. It has the 3 screw stator cover, and the round master. The title says 78, but I guess it got changed along the way. I really thank you guys for helping me ID this. Replacing the rectifier does not sound financially appealing. The caliper is in front of the forks also. I guess that settles that.
Any other advice before I start in on this one?

Hey guys,
THE 77 is RUNNING!!!
It smoked a little, but after running for a while, the smoke went away. I replaced the points, plugs, and condensors, totally cleaned the carbs, flushed and cleaned the tank and took her for a spin. It runs great!!
I hope to have pics up soon before I get body panels and give it a paint job. I can't believe my luck on this one. ($150.00!!!)
