80 KZ1000 ?? was created by FastKaw1
Hi all
I don't post much so please bare with me.
I just picked up a 80 KZ1000 and you guessed it, it needs some work....

I was thinking of changing out the CV carbs for a set of 26mm carbs I
have hanging around. The cv's seem to be in good shape but we all
know they can be a PAIN in the ----

If you had to make the choice what do you think?
and if you were going to buy a bike like this would it make any
difference to you on witch carbs it had on it.

I think it will be for sale when finished.

Thanks

I would leave the 26's alone. they seriously hinder performance. You could find a set of 28 or 34's. How about a pic? Also where are you at? I'm looking for a new bike. ;)

Is the engine bone stock, or has there been any performance mods (bored out, porting, diff cams, etc) done to it?
I'm not that familiar with the 1000's, but I think 26's are kind of small and might make the bike seem lethargic, especially if perf mods have been done to the engine. :pinch:

OK
The bike is all stock. never bin opened up that I can tell.
Bought it from a guy who didn't have a clue as far as I can tell.

I think they used to put 26's on 1000 in 1976-77? (I'd have to look it up) before CV came out.
I know 28's were only on 73-74 then back to 26's
for the rest.
The way I see it, I may lose a little top end but gain on the bottom end
with much better response. With half the worm up time.

Sorry no pic. Im on a dial up it takes way to looooong 28000bps
Im in northern IL in the sticks
I don't wont to sell it as a parts bike. It's bin neglected not abused
and will make someone a great runner...

THANKS

All pre 1981 KZ1000 had slide carbs. Should be 28s on the 1980. You're sure it's a 1980?

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have an 80. They came with 28s with accelerator pump. Either the bike is a different year or someone has changed carbs. No big deal though. Many carbs will work. 26s will work but are too small to be any good unless jetted. 28's are stock but I did did not like the accelerator pump so I got rid fo them. I have 34s now but they are being switched to 29s. If you are just going to sell it I would stick with the carbs it has and get it running and then sell sell sell.

Ron picked up on a point there. 80 1000's dont have cv carbs, just 81 and up.

What exactly are the cv carbs? Wasn't one of the '80 models fuel injected? h1?

The FI KZ1000 was the 1980 G model (the rest of the world got the H model). CV carbs = Constant Velocity carbs...a fundamental design difference compared to slide carbs :)

Can you post a pic or VIN number so we can help you figure out what you have. If the side of the tank is chromed then it is a KZ1000 Classic and would have come stock with fuel injection. Many people had problems with the injectors and switched to carbs instead. I uge you not to trust anything that the last owner told you. Unless it came from a family member or close friend you just never know what has been done to it.
