Just got 77 KZ650 and It Runs was created by srobie1
I bought the bike in hopes to have a good daily driver. Its A 77 kz 650. The guy I bought it from said he had bought it over 2 years ago and has done nothing with it. He also said it sat for 5 years prior to him getting it. So its a barn find. I dumped a little marvel mystry oil on the pistons, new plugs, oil change and filter, a little carb clearner, and a battery. And the damn thing started right up. Ran great idled was high though (4K rpm).It has no air box so I thought this was the reason, so I adjust carbs down. Then I heard a rapping/slapping/ping. I thought maybe Bearings or rings. I have checked the plugs number 3 is fowled and so is number 2 (not as bad as 3)number 1 and 4 are clean as can be. I know the carbs are not right and need to be cleaned completly. Am I looking at carb ping noise or do I need to do a ring job or worse? The bike only has 24k on it and needs the normal work from setting for so long, tires brakes etc.. I dont have a ton of money to dump into it. I am a machinist by trade and am good with a wrench. This is my 1st street bike. I looking for some solid advise on which way to tackle this one. Is it possible to take the top end off while the motor is still in the frame? Or is this just a possible carb job like I am hoping?

First of all welcome to the board. Sounds like a nice find. These old 650's are pretty tough and yours does not have very many miles so chances are good that your problems are minor in nature. Cylinders 2 and 3 are both fired by the same coil and set of points assuming the bike still has points. Your ignition system could be part of your problem. You also could be getting noise from an out of adjustment cam chain. It sounds like you went about firing it up in the right way. It would be wise of you to try and get your hands on some sort of service manual the factory ones are best but clymers are helpful as well. Also put your location in your signature there might be someone from here close to you willing to lend a hand. Also which 650 do you have the B model (spoke wheels) or the C model (mag wheels)? Oh and everyone here loves to see pics.

Ah Clearwater or as I always liked to call it "God's waiting room" As to your picture problem try resizing them to no more than 550 pixels wide and they should load.

Welcome to the site. Check the coil connections too and yes you can pull the top end with the motor in the frame.

welcome, you might want to give it a full tune up, new plugs points condenser, if it still has them, pull the valve cover and check the valves and adj the timing chain, set the timing , and run a compression check, after you make sure all is well then clean the carbs, with that low of miles, it should run for a long time once its back right

I was planning on doing a compression check, I am waiting on a friend to borrow his compression tester. I have changed the plugs. I will try a new condenser. It seems to be getting good spark though. I am more conserned with noise at low RPM's. Checking the ignition timing is something will have to do for sure. Thanks for the tips and all the welcomes Guys this a great forum!! Please keep them coming. I am statring to have hope that I won't have to rip the top end apart. And any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
