Thinking of buying '77 KZ-650 was created by MrDonut
Hello,
I'm thinking of buying a '77 kz 650, I know nothing about bikes but I'm pretty good with tools. Are there any typical problems with these that I should look for or know about in advance. I used to fix 70's ski-doos and they had reoccuring carb problems, any nagging problems in the engine/carbs?
Thanks, JimmyD

Nates vintage bike axiom: Riding is the reward for time spent wrenching.
Murphys corollary: Wrenching is the result of time spent riding.

Most issues are related to neglect and improper maintenance. For a 30 year old machine with good care you can expect normal wear items like tires and drive chain and sprockets to need replacement. The stock ignition coils don't have the greatest reputation so many of us install aftermarket coils from Dynatek or ACCEL. A Dyna S-2 electronic ignition is also a popular upgrade.
One subtle item is the steering head bearing set. They are loose bals on a flat race and will develop a wear spot over time that will act as a detent and affect steering. Replacement tapered bearing kits are readily available.
I worked on a '78 SR 650 that had the swing arm bearings and sleeve worn out most likely due to lack of greasing. Again, maintenance is important to the condition of any bike.
